Many tourists were walking around with nothing to do for three hours in the middle of the September days. For this reason, open a bit longer, the churches of this tiny town may give you something to do. This Rococo 1747 church is lovely. If you walk outside the town into the newer part, you may find open local style restaurants.

Visiting Martina Franca for dinner brought us to the basilica di San Martino at the head of the Piazza Plebiscito in the heart of the centro storico. Built on the site of a previous Romanesque church damaged by an 18th Century earthquake, the facade and interior are in baroque style with decorative rococo details and has in fairly recent times been raised to basilica status and declared an UNESCO site.
The main portal is in the façade looking into the piazza from a raised base served by semi circular steps. Above the portal is a highly decorative relief of San Martino. The facade is also decorative and there are four niches with statues of John the Baptist and Saints Peter, Paul and Joseph. At the upper level, two further niches have statues of Santa Comasia and Santa Martina.
Just inside the door on the left is the baptistery with a columnar font and above the inside face above the door a decorative plaque with an unbridled horse symbol of Martina Franca.
Time didn't allow for more than a cursory look at the various chapels all with highly decorative detail, many with notable history. However, in particular, the niche of the Madonna Pastorella contains a 17th Century sculpture of the madonna as a shepherdess in a gold cloak looking over lambs threatened by a wolf.
Another marble altar depicts Christ at the Flagellation.
The high Altar is a monument in rococo style, highly decorated with angels and statues representing Charity and Abundance. In the niche of the altar is a statue of San Martino from the earlier church.
The decorative vaulted ceiling and cupola above friezes and cornices continue the baroque style.
One needs much longer to appreciate the fullness of detail in this building and I am sorry not to have been able to enjoy that.

Marina Franca was one of my favourite cities when we visited Puglia. The buildings are mostly beautifully restored and there are old cream marble pavements and a touch of greenery in squares and parks that increases the beauty.
The Basilica is a beautiful example of baroque workmanship (in marble and paint effects) and it's grand architecture is really worth a visit. Be sure to explore the small side wing/chaple on the left of the alter.

Elegant, compared to some Italian churches / basilicas relatively simple. A must if you’re in SAN Martino

Just had a quick look on the outside and was very beautiful with ornate masonry. Worth a quick visit if in the area.

We had a quick look inside while visiting the historic center of Martina Franca. Certainly worth to look inside but nothing really impressive compared to other churches

To get to the church we enjoyed walking down the street (stone path really) with Baroque palazzos and houses all the way The church is squeezed in a small plane. The front is amazing and the inside has famous statues, two gorgeous side chapels and lots of history. We loved it.

Set in the middle of the old town, the church rises out of the narrow streets and allows for an open square to the front. Its facade is impressive - creamy, white marble baroque - and inside it's beautifully maintained to a very high standard. Peaceful and cool, it is a lovely place to stop to revive the senses, the body and the spirit.

Just come back from a week staying in Puglia. Love Martina Franca. Beautiful old walled city with some amazing architecture. The Churchs are just beautiful. You must visit the Palace, the paintings on the ceilings and walls are amazing. You must also taste the gelato, to die for !!!! Try the cherry again just amazing.

Basilica San Martino, Chiese e Convento di San Domenico, Chiesa di Santa Maria della Purita are three wonderful churches in Marina Franca. The town is very diverse, with a number of old rococo and baroque buildings. It was established as a refuge for people who fled Taranto during the Saracen invasions.
It is a most enjoyable town to walk through, with excellent shops and restaurants.
We especially enjoyed dinner at Osteria del Coco Pazzo!
