About
The Bakery Museum of Furnes houses the most important collection of bakery heritage in Belgium. Through numerous activities, demonstrations and workshops, visitors can get a (litteral!) taste of how bread used to be made back in the day. The museum is located in a restored farmhouse, the 'Zuidgasthoeve' and breathes tradition and history. The permanent collection hosts a unique ensemble of objects related to sugar, ice, chocolate, waffle and speculoos production. In the barn a collection of historic tools illustrates the process from grain to bread. Insider tip: Don't skip the museum's cafe and it's sunny terrace with playground for children. Daily fresh pastries, a cup of coffee or a local beer will make your day complete.

After basically giving up trying to work out when museums are open, if at all in France, we popped over the border to Belgium and found this delightful bakery museum.
Very well laid out, with plenty to look at and see. I would advise you buy the guide book ( english ) it is only a euro and has quite a bit of information.
Each room has a different theme, not just bread, but waffles ,chocolate, biscuits, ice cream , sweets, etc. And it is in a really old building with a history to it.
Then over to the large barn with even more exhibits in, mainly about bread but with a few other surprises. There are many exhibits of different kinds of bread from all over the world brought back by the globe trotting museum staff.
There is also a place where you can buy snacks and also a good area for the children to play in while you relax.
A great way to spend a couple of hours.

We visited and found it very interesting with information not only about bread making but also making biscuits, sweets, ice cream, marzipan and waffles. We saw a statue of St Aubertus the patron saint of bakers, models of prehistoric loaves and much more.
As the children had completed the trail provided, they got a little bag of chocolates at the end. We went to eat at the cafeteria on site, we found the food tasty and good value for money.

What a lovely, lovely place to visit. It's a real gem of a find, just off the main route! It's been baking since the early 1300s and still makes and bakes bread today. Everyone there is so friendly. The cafeteria stocks lots of homemade and local produce and is not too expensive. Highly recommended way of spending a morning or afternoon.

As this is a bakery museum, you can image they includes all bakery tools, history about the bakery in decades and special molds which made for special occasions. There are also big grass field and have some actities from time to time.
When we were there was happenly to be a rainy day; not a super day but because they have extra activity (small kids favorite - air jumping castle) and some kids facility so in the end, we still had some fun.
There's a nice café in the bakery, so you can have a sit, take a break if don't have a tight schedule.
PS.
1. There's entry fee for 5euro/ea for adult; details you can check their official website.
2. If you have other places you plan to go, skip this one or put in less priority. Unless you are a big fan of knowing bakery history, I wouldn't recommend people to go there. Plopsaland De Panne, Great beach close by Veurne, Beauvoorde Castle with historical furnatures and fascinated stories...these already can made you a great long weekend or 2-3 days vacation in Veurne.
3. You can only park outside of the bakery along the road; luckily we could find a spot due ot bad weather. Be aware when you visit by car

And some days, children can be active in this bakery museum. They can learn with some guides how to make chocolade eggs, bread, wafles, pancakes... The museum function is well established, for children and for adults. Highly recommanded.

We came here (2 adults) in August 2016 and liked it very much. There is a lot to see with displays on the making of bread, cakes, sweets, ice-cream, waffles and other sweet treats. There are moulds and casts on display as well as types of bread, waffle irons through the ages, an old-fashioned sweet shop and a bicycle that churns ice cream. There are also cool touches like a stained glass window over in the second barn and various baking equipment and an old Citroen bread-delivery vehicle (wouldn’t it be great if they brought back daily deliveries of freshly-baked bread). Separating the two barns there is a large grassy garden area with a herb garden. The second barn is great because I thought it had come to an end after the first barn. But there is plenty more to see in there and a lot more space. If none of this sounds interesting, the Bakery Museum probably isn’t for you but I found it a simple, quiet place that does what it says on the tin. I found it interesting and informative. There is also a café, accessed independently of the Museum.
The Bakery Museum held my attention for a couple of hours. It’s very cheap to get into and I’d recommend it to anyone who enjoys bread and baked goods and wants to know a little about their history and how they are made!

On one of the last days of our stay in the area we needed something to do and found a voucher for the museum in a book provided by the guest house.
We went during the bank holiday in Belgium (This place is great as it was still open where 99% of other places are shut). When we got in and went to pay we found the price had been discounted, the museum is made up of two barns separated by a garden and the second barn was closed for renovation. We were given and informative English guide and told how far through the guide we could go. In the first barn each room gives information and exhibits on a different function bakers in Belgium perform, these included bread (of course), biscuits, sweets, chocolate and ice cream.
Looking through the guide the rest of the tour in the second barn would have been a more in depth look at how bread is made from the milling process to actual baking, but we didnt get to go that far, it was a shame because I really enjoyed what we did see, it was informative and well laid out.
