You do NOT need a guide for Tiscali! Seriously.
I wanted to do the Tiscali hike for 3 reasons:
1—hike to the top of a mountain to see ruins of a 2,000-year-old city? What’s not to love about this??? Completely awesome.
2—after reading so many crabby complaints about needing a guide on this review site, I HAD to see if this hike could be done without one.
3—I have hiked Samaria Gorge in Crete and though it is beautiful, it is SO crowded (being the most popular hike on Crete). I feared Su Gorropu would be similar and thought the more difficult climb to Tiscali would be less crowded.
On all 3 points we scored a win.
1--The hike and ruins were both wonderful. There is an entrance fee which you pay to the archaeologist camped out at the ruins (who will happily go on and on about Tiscali in several languages. The man REALLY loves the site). Though some reviewers complained of this, I do not have a problem with fees to sites—someone has to maintain them and that isn’t cheap.
2—I don’t know why anyone would think you “must have” a guide for this hike. Not only did we not have trouble, but was saw a French couple who EACH HAD A CHILD UNDER 2 YEARS OLD STRAPPED TO THEIR BACK. It wasn’t easy but we NEVER got lost and if we were unsure of which way to go we used common sense (go UP and head THROUGH the mountain pass) or just stopped and looked around. The hike is marked but it’s not a bloody theme park with signs all over the damn place. There are a few clear path markers and where there are NOT, the other ‘options’ are not options. Someone clever has gone to great lengths to put large impediments (branches, tree trunks, etc) across parts of the hike that may look slightly like a trail but are not. Follow common sense and stop to assess if you are confused.
3--I can’t speak to how crowded Su Gorropu was since we didn’t take it, BUT we were passed by ONE COUPLE on our way up (um, embarrassingly, we were passed by the couple with babies strapped to their backs), and passed about 3 sets of people coming down. It was blissfully quiet for 99% of the hike. Conversely, when we left Hotel Silana, we saw several groups of people heading down to Su Gorropu from there and also there were many, many cars parked at the hike entrance we took. As we passed very few of these people on our hike to Tiscali, I can only assume that they all went to Su Gorropu.
Last words of advice. The hike took 4 hours for us there and back with about a half hour to roam the site. We took 3 liters of water for the 2 of us. I should have taken a 4th. Also, I brushed a tick off my husband before it got a chance to dig in its claws in the more forested canopy part of the hike, so be aware of ticks.
We started our hike by taking the turnoff into the valley from km marker 200-201. If you follow that road down and start your hike from there, a lovely little stream awaits you when you finish. It is the perfect temperature for soaking your sore feet. I wish I had brought my bathing suit! On this same road is a very small family winery where we stopped, had a few wine tastes and bought some wine before heading back to our hotel. I highly recommend this.

I have to write this review, having read the other reviews, to tell any of you that are considering this walk that it is completely possible without a guide. We did this with the Lonely Planet Guide Book as our only aid, and lost our way only at the top of Mount Tiscali; but were able to locate the village after 5 or 10 minutes. You need sensible walking shoes and water. Please don't be put off by these other negative reviews- it is completely doable. By the way we are in our fifties, and it took us an hour and 40 minutes.
The walk to the village took us through beautiful, rugged and unspoilt countryside and for me was better than the village itself.

As previous people have mentioned, if you are going up from the Sa Brava side you need to drive across the bridge by the bar where there is paid parking (€6 a day or €10 overnight) and drive till you get to the car park. I can see why people stop at the bar as by this stage the road is single track and in poor condition!
You will recognise the car park as it has a wooden post and rail fence around it. Trail 481 leads out the back of this car park, if you don't see a trail sign in the first 20 meters you are probably on the wrong trail. There are other trails to Tiscali but I didn't see any trail maps of the area. The trail goes straight up and the terrain is rocky so you need decent shoes and as we had poles we used them as well which helped.
It's a 2 hour hike to the ruins and whilst I would like to say that when you get to the top of the first uphill bit it's all flat but it's not! It does get flat for a while and then starts to descend (which means up on the way back!). The last part is a steep uphill climb that gets steeper towards the end. You won't get lost as the trail is well worn and marked. There is no water on this route so take at least a litre.
The ruins are unimpressive and not much to see. There is a €5 entry fee and you do a circuit inside the ruins which leads you back to the entrance.
I am sure there are easier ways to get to Tiscali as I can't see the ticket collector doing the 481 trail on a daily basis!
The walk was good and you feel like you have had a work out (and you have!) but the ruins are not much to look at.

Great hike and interesting visit at the sight. We took trail 410 on the way up and 481/411 back. I'd recommend that for variety and I'd rather not take 410 down; to steep. No signs at all on 410 that say you're on the right trail, but it is well marked red/white (Polish flag), and it will take you all the way (watch out for the fork with 480 - wrong way!) No need for a guide.

Really enjoyed this hike, it takes you to the heart of the mountains with great views. Apparently lots of people get lost on the route that starts from the Oliena side, we did the route from South of Dorgali, which was easy to find, we got directions from the information centre in Dorgali, the lady there is very helpful. there's also good directions here -http://www.summitpost.org/monte-tiscali/619504,Valley of Rio Flumineddu approach. It took us less than 3 hours including the visit to the village and a lunch stop at the summit above. Greatly recommended and no guide needed.

One warm, sunny day in May, 2007, myself and 6 friends were taken on a guided walk to Tiscali. Getting there involved a strenuous walk with breathtaking views and scenery as we climbed higher and higher up the Sopramonte mountain. Tiscali itself, hidden at the top of the mountain, in what was once an enormous cave, is fascinating. Though there is not much of the ancient village remaining, what there is makes you feel in awe of the Nuraghic people who lived and survived there in such an isolated place.
We all agreed, at the end of exhilarating day, that it had been a wonderful, enjoyable and worthwhile experience and would recommend a visit to Tiscali to anyone who likes a challenging walk with a touch of mystery and history as the goal.
The trip was organised specifically for us by Esedra, Bosa www.esedrasardegna.it

We arrived at the car park in the Lanaittu valley where we met a French family returning after an unsuccessful attempt to find the path. We too failed after spending about 45 mins looking for it. At the tourist information place at the nearby Grotta di Ohe, we were informed that all the red and white path markings mentioned in all the guide books had been deliberately erased, presumably to ensure employment for the local guides. We were not impressed as we had driven some distance specifically to do this walk. Furthermore, the lady in the booth on the road to the car park, whilst being anxious to ensure we had the right footwear and enough water, failed to mention that a guide was necessary. So if you want to do this walk, be sure to book in advance with a guide. Note that the Sunflower Guide to Sardinia gives an alternative route from a different valley which may be easier to follow, but we didn't have chance to try it.

We took the route from Ponte Sa Barva. You can park your car at the parking (€4 for half day) or drive a little bit further, pass the bridge and then go right. There is an open spot where you can park your car for free, plus it's a bit closer to the trail.
The trail (number 481) is well marked and super easy to navigate. The hike is tiring, but mainly because of the August heat. Be sure to start early before it heats up. The cave was not so special but the hike itsself has wonderfull views and is highly recommendend.

Best hiking trip ever! Did it 3 times until today and keeps impressing me.
The mountain view in the early morning, the quietness, the forest, the climb.
Can't wait to go again.

We'd heard mixed reviews about how plausible the hike was without maps/a guide. However, we found really useful and detailed instructions for arriving at the trailhead from the Lanaitto Valley side on Planet Mountain. These were spot on, even though it feels like you drive for a really long time.
Getting there:
From the centre of Oliena going east on the SP46, there were even some tourism road signs which indicated Tiscali and Su Gologone (the SP46 and the road/track that leads off it through the Lanaitto Valley is visible on Googlemaps named as 'Strada per Valle di Lanaittu'). When this road turns into a smaller track, you will start to see red and white painted symbols on the rocks, trees, and gate posts - these indicate you are going in the right direction.
The hiking trail:
This nice little hike wasn't particularly tough, though the first half has some pretty steep stretches of path. It took us just over an hour in each direction (we are fairly active 30 year-olds but by no means regular hikers). We did this trail in April, when the weather was perfect for hiking - we started at 10am, returned by 2pm, and were in the shade of the hill/trees almost throughout. We drank about 1L of water each, and the 2L each we took was an overestimate at this time of year.
Along the trail, there are red and white painted symbols which have been recently repainted (and in places rerouted) as of April 2016. Some of these are numbered 410 - the trails on the other side of the hill have different numbers. Generally speaking, the path leads out of the car park and gets progressively less wide; keep going up hill on the clear, marked path until you reach a slightly-scrambly rocky area which leads up and left to the cleft in the rock mentioned on the website above. After the cleft, the path leads you around the lip of the hill (with the downward slope on your left), so keep following the symbols even though it leads slightly downhill.
