You enter through the little side door ... boah!
Unbelievable how well all these paintings have survived. The pictures don't do the experience justice.
It is absolutely worth it to drive a fair distance to Galatina only to see this basilica.
Do it! You won't regret it.
(In Otranto there is the Basilica di San Pietro which is similar but they don't seem to have their opening times under control.)

Absolutely one of the most beautiful places to visit! the entire church is covered in visual history (some rather scary) with beautiful colors and designs, from highest point to the floorsf. There is also a magnificent little pipe organ, restored. Truly a place not to miss!

Santa Caterina d'Alessandria, in Galatina, is a "pearl"- not to be missed!
The church belongs to the Frati Minori (Franciscans) and is a splendid example of Pugliese Romanesque and gothic architecture. The interior is covered in frescos, many of which tell the story of Saint Catherine's martyrdom. Most are the work of Giotto-school artists and Francesco d'Arezzo, from the 15th century. Santa Catherina is one of the rare examples of a Romanesque/Gothic church that is still as it was when it was built: entirely decorated in frescos (to instruct the illiterate faithful and to glorify God).
It is a magic place where one can spend an hour or more contemplating the beauty of the decor or just meditating. The adjacent cloister can also be visited. There are still 3 Franciscan monks present at the convent, two are elderly and one is fairly young and dynamic. We attended an incredible concert of sacred music (Scarlatti and Bach) there while this summer – an unforgettable moment.

This church was beautiful on the inside. It's painted from top to bottom. Interesting paintings. Entry is free.

This building is certainly worth a visit. It tells the story of Santa Catarina, who is depicted with her wheel in statue, fresco and paintings. Colourful, clear and marvellous, a landmark worth te visit.

This is just fantastic. Interior of the church is covered in high quality 14 th century frescoes - sometimes described as the Assisi of the south- and justifiably.

The third largest frescoed church in Italy, in the small town of Galatina! A must see if you are in the Salento region. The frescoes are incredible, made by painters who were influenced by Giotto - when he worked in Naples. Free admission.

Galatina is not a big town, but worth visiting for this. The photos don't do it justice. It's stunning.
