While touring Puglia, we drove from Copertino to Galatina to visit the Basilica di Santa Caterina d'Alessandria and by chance we saw the gates to Santi Dimitri on the outskirts of Galatina. We drove in through the wonderful olive groves and then suddenly came upon an amazing winery. This part of Italy often bears the evidence of poor planning or a lack of appropriate design. This though is incredible, although modern, it fits perfectly into the ancient landscape despite its significant size.

What they do in here though is alchemy. I think that most people think of Tuscany when it comes to Italian wine but in my opinion, Puglian wines are amazing. Maybe it is down to the climate or the indigenous grape varieties, but whatever the reason, Santi Dimitri wines are absolutely delicious! Some work well with food, some are best to have on their own. I sound like a bit of an authority I know but it’s because we just had to buy some to consume subsequently on our travels. Had there not been such baggage weight restrictions, I would have brought some home too. Mercifully though I hear that Naked wines stock a couple but not the whole range which is annoying. Having said that though, I don’t seem to be able to find it anywhere on their website, which frankly has quite spoilt my day.

Anyway, the wine aside, they also sell wonderfully flavoursome olive oil together with related products such as mandarin infused oil and tapenade. If you are in the area, even if you’re not actually, make the effort because this winery is absolutely brilliant.

We were served by Edoardo who, I believe is the wine maker. He is incredibly friendly, knowledgably and charming. When we came to pay we half expected to have to remortgage our house. Given the time he spent talking us through the different wines as well as the oil too, we knew that we were about to blow our entire holiday budget. Not a bit of it! Given the quality of what is on offer here at Santi Dimitri, the prices are insanely low. There is even a petrol pump type of wine dispenser where the locals line up to fill large containers at discounted prices to take home and entertain the extended family. Oh to be Italian!

What more can you ask for? We pulled in off the street with no appointment, and had a most wonderful tasting and tour with Carlo. He was interrupted often by local townsfolk coming into to fill up on jugs of his wine from his taps. It was a pleasure to see him have such a steady local clientele. In addition to sampling great wines, we bought the most delicious (dry) pasta there. I am lamenting that I didn't purchase more....of everything!

We visited, without an appointment, and Eduardo (who runs it with his brother) kindly gave us over an hour of his time to tour the facility. We then tasted any of the wines we desired as well as the olive oil they produce. We loved everything we tasted--bought a couple of cases! Their Primitivos and Negromanos are wonderfully rich and nuanced as well as one they blend together with both grapes. Their white blend is also noteworthy--Chardonnay and Sav Blanc if I recall correctly. Location is just outside Galatina so hard to miss, large gate with their sign very prominent. They also have a "filling station" so locals can come and fill their jugs--it was busy the entire time we were tasting so they have a strong local following. Great wines for 7-15E on average a bottle.
