I can proudly brag about covering the whole length of the fortress wall. I did not do it at once. It took me several years to do that. In the past some sections were neglected. Anyone could climb over there and walk amid piles of garbage. This time I was pleasantly surprised to see a well-kept wall.

While in Smolensk we stopped here and went up to the top of this wall. It was a bit dangerous going up the steps but once at the top the view was great if the city.

Astonishing building, lasting 6 kilometers, standing here for almost 4 centuries. Was build by efforts of all cities of Russia, suffered a lot of wars (with Poland, Napoleon invasion and second World War) and still alive. You can climb on some towers and walls to see amazing landscapes and feel youself old-time strelez, defending the city during the siege.
Major downside of this sight is that local authorities don`t care about it at all. Half of walls and towers are wrecked, only one tower in south is working as a museum - others are slowly collapsing. All visits are on your own risk, most of towers still look solid, but some seem pretty dangerous. Still an amazing place to visit.

This ancient structure have made the strongest impression on me in Smolensk. The huge fortress wall puts you into the atmosphere of ancient old Russian settlements. Wall's restored remains can be found in various places of the city, most of them are in good condition. And in some places (if you ask at the local), you can even get into the Fortress wall!!!

The fortress is surrounding the whole central part of Smolensk and is a must-see. It has survived until now only partly, but still looks very impressive. There is a good museum in Gromovaya Tower. But if you go to the Eastern part towards Oryol (Eagle) Tower, there is a possibility to climb to the fortress and to walk along its walls. Unfortunately that part is distant from the centre and is not well maintained.

The kremlin is HUGE. There were originally over 30 towers, 17 of which are still standing. I think it's the biggest I've seen so far in Russia.

Smolensk, once an important border city between Russia and Poland/Lithuania, suffered a lot from WWII hostilities and hardly ever recovered so far. The Fortress used to room families living there without any basic utilities until late 70-s. These days, the fortress remains the prime attraction for tourists, one can climb the walls and march for hundreds of feet observing a low-rise provincial Russian city. One can easily find an English-speaking guide on the Internet to have a 2-hour tour around the city. Overall, this is nice city for a one-day trip. You could get back to Moscow bu a fast train in 3-4hours twice a day.

The main attraction of the city, its towers and fragments can be found everywhere in the old part of the city. Not all fragments have been preserved equally well, there are some abandoned towers and parts of the wall. Along with this, there are well-restored parts, in some towers, there are museums and restaurants. There is a possibility to climb the wall and pass along it.
