Spectacular view over Sonche Cañon
úno 2020
The river Sonche runs east to west near the village of Huancas. The slopes on both sides of the river are rocky and steep (unusable for agriculture). Several creeks feed the Sonche and at some points form waterfalls. There is no road at the bottom of the canyon. For all these reasons the view over the canyon is spectacular.

Huancas is 8 km (5 miles) from Plaza de Armas in Chachapoyas. The main viewpoint called Mirador del Cañon de Huancas Sonche is 1 km (0.6 mile) from the center of Huancas. Entrance fee 3 Soles.

There is a regular (mini)bus service from Chachapoyas (two blocks north from Plaza de Armas) to Huancas. Price 3 Soles one way.

I took me 1 hour and 45 minutes to walk from Chachapoyas to Huancas along the dirt road (up 280m), a bit less on the way down.

Stunning views close to town
říj 2019 • Pár
We took the colectivo to the cañón, it was 3 soles each way and took around 15 minutes. They leave from near the airport road and have a proper station. We were told it’s about a 2 hour walk each way and the views are lovely on the way.

There are two viewpoints to visit, the first is where the colectivo drops you. Entry is 3 soles, there were clean toilets and a cold drinks stall too. The views are incredible, and you can walk along the valley a bit.

Huancas, the small village next to the viewpoints, is lovely and worth stopping in to have a drink. We had a beer in a really lovely cafe, it felt more like someone’s house and they were so friendly.

The second viewpoint is at the other end of town. We walked and it was about 4.5km on an easy path and again 3 soles entry fee. I think this viewpoint was even more impressive, but both were stunning. On a clearer day you can see Gocta from here. We had a lovely hot chocolate at the cafe here (best in Peru so far) and they also had some cakes and breads. There is also an archaeological site you can walk to from there and that actually also leads to another viewpoint out to the other side of the valley. Again there were toilets here.

This place is incredible and easy to access from Chachapoyas. You can walk along the road to Huancas (1H30) or take a colectivo.

Do not miss it!!!

We did not know nothing about this hidden beauty of Chachapoyas. Just asked the taxi driver after our trip to Yumbilla waterfall to take us up to the hill because we wanted to shoot some overviews of Chachapoyas city and surroundings. Mybe he did not understand well /my spanis is just basic/ but he said ok we have one point here. At first we thought he wants to take us to slums to be robbed but after we missed perifery of the city there was a small village at the end. With nothing. Just a few houses, no chance to see panorama of Chachapoyas. He said. Go up to the small hill with this tower. There was small tower at the top of the hill. We thought that maybe from that place we’ll see some part of the city. But the biggiest surprise was at the other side. Just see the pictures. That canyon is breathtaking!!! Do not miss it. Just 20 minutes drive from the center of Chachapoyas.

Worth a quick visit

I would recommend waking up early and visiting early in the morning. It won't take a lot of time and you can do it before visiting another sight that day.

Good for a half day
čvc 2017 • Přátelé
I want to echo those reviews that endorse this as an easy and worthwhile way to spend a half day in Chachapoyas. Huancas is 8km north of Chachapoyas (not 6km as other reviews noted). Walk directly north from the Plaza de Armas and you will find it on the road that also goes to the airport. The walk is pleasant and affords beautiful views of the area. When you get to Huancas follow the newly built stairs up the hill but then bear right toward the town's Plaza de Armas and continue eastward toward the overlook. Signage is sparse. You will pay a tiny fee. The overlook features a tower (as if you need an even more aerial view of the canyon) and a series of walkways and terraces. The canyon is quite grand and worth admiring for about 30 minutes. You can easily catch a collective back to Chachapoyas for 3 soles, though it was difficult to get one to Huancas to begin with.

Great view, perfect for an easy day out from Chachapoyas
lis 2016 • Rodina
This cañon is only about 20 minutes by car (or taxi or mototaxi) from the center of Chachapoyas so it's perfect for a half-day trip. The views are great and the depth of the canyon is certainly impressive. If you feel like walking a bit more you can visit the various lookouts.

take a walk to a big old canyon near Chachapoyas
říj 2016 • Jednotlivci
Its about a 6 km walk to Huancas, I walked it, but took a tuk-tuk back. The canyon is big, the facilities are basic, but well done. There is a nice overlook and waterfalls across the canyon.
