It is a monument to miners in general.
We saw it in mid-August during our private city tour of Kemerovo. Its author is a famous Soviet sculptor Ernst Neizvestny who later emigrated to US and was immediately labelled "a traitor" by communists. When they went bankrupt with their ideas and practice, he proceeded working for the country he'd left and that huge statue in Kemerovo is one of such examples. It is his gift to the city.
Great piece of art, excellent location, popular place among locals. Symbol of Kemerovo.
Strongly recommended. Nicely illuminated by night.

The long esplanade leading to the monument is beautifully landscaped, and you are likely to see brides and grooms here to take wedding photos. The sculpture itself is very large and interesting, but the star of the show I believe is the view of the river and the city beyond, showing among other things, the coal industry areas that are the lifeblood of the economy. It is worth a visit.

With the mining background of this region, the memorial is a significant reminder about the sacrifices of the early miners in the region. It's a must see in the area if you travel there.
