What travelers are saying
- LhazUSA192 contributionsTo witness with our own eyes the Eucharist miracle from 12 centuries ago is indeed a miracle in itself for us and our faith. The medieval town of Lanciano is very charming.Written February 16, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - bepper263Brussels, Belgium4,850 contributionsThe Historic Center of this city is truly a small gem of history, with houses that overlook narrow streets and very often imperceptible by cars, which once did not exist and find it impossible today to move where only horses or mules crossed far away.
Streets that are paved and unpaved, with custom buses so that they can pass unnecessary and carry the few passengers from one point to another in the city.
Then climb up or down to face patiently, if you want to get the centre right up, maybe holding the handrails that allow those who have more difficulty not to fall (I think of the winter season, which even here must not be totally devoid of snow and ice!).
Historic Lanciano is plenty of beautifully restored houses and extraordinary floral balconies, but also of some dense edifice and certainly difficult to live.
In fact, the living standards of a time contrast hard with the needs of today, and enter a housing in the centre, with a vertical development on multiple floors in which no more than one room per floor can be found, on steep and narrow stairs, with heights impossible to handle even for medium height people, requires courage and expertise.
During our visit, I found an interesting road panel showing "The Way of the Apostle Thomas", probably indicating a religious path that the pilgrim had to overcome to reach the centre of Luciano and get indulgences in the “Santuario” of the Eucharistic Miracle, one of the city attractions that is worth the visit.
Nevertheless, take time for a walk worth the effort: it is like taking a leap back in time and imagining how life was in Lanciano and in many villages in the region and in Italy in the past centuries, with so many sacrifices and so much poverty.
For those who plan to visit, the city centre is a “must”, a stop not to be missed, with a little attention however from those who had mobility and walking problems.Written June 7, 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It is in the center of Lancioan and around the corner is a small church where the miracle of Lanciano can be found.Written February 19, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Larry GCambridge, UK288 contributionsWhilst in the Abruzzo region we found that the only things open with any consistency were the churches so found these were the buildings we often visited during our stay. This church is equally stunning inside and out and well worth popping into even if just for 10-minutes like we didWritten April 17, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Larry GCambridge, UK288 contributionsWhilst staying in the Abruzzo region in April, we found all too often that the things we had selected to do each day were inevitably closed. We would typically arrive at a town or city around 11am and after grabbing a quick coffee set off for the first monument, church or tower. The running joke by mid way through the week though was that whatever we selected to do next would not matter as it would inevitably be closed anyway. Just a shame it all too often proved to be the case.
Unfortunately again in the instance of Torre San Giovanni, we found the tower location no problems at all but found it was closed with no signage indicating a time at which it would reopen. We therefore could only admire the building from the outside and imagine the view we would have got looking out from the top.Written April 17, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
