I went to Isola Madre with a good friend of mine on a Thursday afternoon (Oct. 12) and it was a pure delight First of all, at this season and on a weekday, there wasn't a horde of tourists which was so much appreciated. We arrived around 2 pm and had first a small lunch/snack at Caffetteria La Serra.

We then visited the Palace. The highlights of this palazzo were the Venetian room with a beautiful sophisticated trompe l’œil and the Marionette Theatre. The collection is among the most extensive and best conserved in the world.

The botanical garden is exceptional. I can imagine how beautiful it could be during the camelias, magnolias or wisterias blooming.

The Butia capitata, which in autumn produces large clusters of juicy orange-colored fruit with such a delicious exotic fragrance scented the alleys. It was a pure delight.

Isola Madre is full of multi-colored birds as well as golden pheasants and white peacocks.

It was indeed a relaxing afternoon. I cannot wait to come back next year in spring.

Rocca di Angera is a wonderful castle visit for people of all ages !

The Doll Rooms are fantastic - and include video displays of mechanical dolls. This will appeal to all !

The historic rooms, and particularly the Sala di di Guistizia, is entirely frescoed - and worth a jouney to view.

Outside are Midieval Gardens - based on research from documents and manuscripts- that recreate original gardens.

Plus: as a service, available is an cafe with a beautiful view.

    Wonderful castle - for a visit !

We loved our visit to this palace on an island in Lake Maggiore. The island (which is almost totally covered by the palace and its grounds) is easily accessible by boat from Stresa. The inside of the palace is amazing, with elaborate decorations that seem more stunning with each room. The gardens are equally amazing. Unfortunately it was raining on the day we visited but we were still able to explore these. I recommend visiting when you are in Stresa.

Stretching from the ferry jetty and tourist office it's a nice walk along the promenade with shade from trees if it's too hot. There's a large grass area where you can have a picnic, lay in the sun or have a swim. Also numerous cafe/bar options along the front and Main Street - although not all seemed to be open when we visited early July. Handily, there's a cell phone charging station below the war memorial/statue in the small square next to the ferry jetty. Most visitors to the town are there to visit the castle above town but for us that's another day.

Laveno Mombello, one of the most beautiful villages overlooking the shores of Lake Maggiore, is certainly among the best known. Among the reasons of notoriety there is certainly the presence of the ferry that connects the Lombard coast with the Piedmontese one: enchanting, among other things, is the view of the Gulf of Laveno that can be admired from the ferry.
The Gulf of Laveno Mombello on the Lombard coast of Lake Maggiore: the ferry goes back and forth with Verbania Intra in about twenty minutes, a short distance away is the famous hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso Ballaro, equipped with a dock for the service boats public, the visit enriched by the passage on the lake will be truly an unforgettable walk. The view from the lake manages to provide a beautiful overall view of the beautiful town, nestled at the foot of the Sasso del Ferro with an astonishing panoramic summit reachable with the cable car from Laveno.

On the hill near the city was built this abbey in the ninth century, inexplicably but is under the diocese of Pavia.
Outside the facade is squat due to the closure of an ancient portico, very nice bell tower with a big hat.
Inside with three naves and the closed portico with several marvelous frescoes.
Many wonderful paintings are on the lateral altars and many frescoes too.
The mayor altar surrounded by frescoes is above the ancient crypt .
Beautiful the right apse , the ceiling is completely decorated and frescoed, In the wall you can see a marvelous painting of the Last Diner made by Giovanni Battista Tarilli in 1581, on the wall of the left nave you can see The Madonna of the Lemons painted in the same period .

This an Ancient Bizantine basilica with a holy icon of the Virgin Mary. The icon is miraculous and has save Angera during the great water flow in 20 century. Inside of the church there is a holy atmosphere.

Very nice church to visit. Two popes had visited here: Pope John XXIII and Pope Pius X. The church is beautiful in the simple decoration. The oldest church in the town of Luino and it faces Lago Maggiore.

A little hike up the hill and enjoy the little church with its view over the Lago Maggiore. Great place also to come to peace with oneself again.
