The imposing and elegant Villa Reale is set in the Indro Montanelli gardens; it is also known as Villa di Belgiojoso in honour of the eponymous Count who commissioned its creation at the end of the 18th century. The sumptuous interiors of the Villa have housed the Galleria d'Arte Moderna (GAM) in Milan since 1921 and, in its long history, it provided lodgings to many illustrious characters. It had the function of representing Milano’s Authorities to those who came to visit from Vienna, before it eventually became a museum.

Adorned with mythological statues and reliefs, conceived by Neo-classical poet Giuseppe Parini and sculpted by the same artisans who toiled on the Duomo's facade, it is a timeless and immensely fascinating building.

Inside, a profusion of nineteenth-century masterpieces and international avant-garde works from the early 1900s make GAM one of the most extensive collections of modern art in Italy. Antonio Canova, Francesco Hayez and Lombard Romanticism, the most famous works of the Scapigliatura and the Divisionist season with Medardo Rosso and Segantini. Not forgetting the great Italian and foreign artists from the thirteenth to the twentieth century, with amazing works by Renoir, Van Gogh, Manet, Fattori and Segantini, Morandi, Sironi, De Pisis, Modigliani, Picasso and Matisse, together with a collection of ancient artefacts from the Far East!

My first experience of these gardens dates back to the 1950s, when my family moved from Bologna to Milan. In my memories as a child, a feature that no longer exists remains most impressed: the zoo, located in the north-west corner of the park; a magical place for me, but really too small to ensure animal welfare (and in fact it was definitively closed in 1992). But I remember other salient features very well, such as the scenography of artificial rocks on the north side (towards the Bastions of Porta Venezia) and internal waterways and lakes, with a slow and placid stream, and bordered by huge trees. Of course also the Natural History Museum and the Planetarium; but these are attractions apart.
The position of the garden may seem central today (and it is); but consider that the "Ramparts of Porta Venezia" (on which today a car avenue runs), with which the gardens border to the north, were occupied precisely by the ramparts, so-called "Spanish", because they were built by the viceroy of Spain (ruler of Milan at the time) in the mid-16th century. So the gardens, when they were established (from what I read, in 1784, the time of Austrian domination over the city) were very much on the outskirts.
The architect who designed the gardens was Giuseppe Piermarini, representative of neoclassical art in Italy, known above all for having built the Teatro alla Scala. Instead, the arrangement with false rocks, streams and lakes, referring to the experience of the English "landscape gardens", dates back to 1881, the year in which a memorable exhibition took place, the Italian National Exhibition, occupying part of the garden, which consecrated the role of Milan as the economic capital of Italy.
Overall, the gardens are now a remarkable green lung of the city of Milan, all the more precious because it is central in the city today.

The park is situated nearby the shopping area Corso Buenos Aires, so it is a welcome pause from the busy shopping street. Its nice for a walk, there is also a playground, however its not outspokingly astonishing.

The ancient door belonged to the walls of Bastioni raised in the 16th century for defensive purposes, the original gate was destroyed by Napoleon, the one we can see today was built in 1810 with the triumphal arch ad the two symmetrical sandstone units.
From the arch you can se the modern palaces of business district Porta Volta

This church is very beautiful. I passed it when walking around. It’s well maintained and worth a look. The fountain out front is also interesting.

This gateway is on the northern side of the city and dates back to the 12th century. It has been damaged many times and rebuilt and restored in the 1800’s and 1900’s. Just south of this gate are all the fashion stores and designers.

Inside the Montanelli park, on the west side , you can see the best facade of this beautiful palace dated back on 17th century .
Until 1848 the palace was a private residence, then became the first location of Natural History museum . When the museum translated to the palace in the opposite side of the park, this palace was used and still used as temporary exposition and conferences.

This museum is well worth a visit for art lovers. It is very close to the metro train station & the entry is covered by the Museum Toursit card. I would definitely recommend visiting this museum if you are in Milan.
