What travelers are saying
- Angelo ZEvant, TX300 contributionsThe cathedral is an impressive and impossing blend of Arab, Norman,Gothic and Baroque. The inside shares some of the same influences, there is much to see. There are different chapels, crypts and what’s called the treasury. You can also go on the roof but it’s very narrow. The park outside is a great place to people watch.Written January 1, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Jon LOlathe, KS261 contributionsGorgeous palace dating back to the 1100s, containing the Capella Palatina from 1132. The chapel was built in Norman/Byzantine/Arab style and is quite beautiful. The gardens outside are amazing, too.Written March 17, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Tripsnek LadyAtlanta, GA321 contributionsIt is hard to get to, but it is worth it. Just the best mosaics in the world. Parking is very easy. Make sure to have money for the bathroom.Written March 12, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Elia B10 contributionsWe visited the tonnara of Favignana our last day on the Egadis. The tonnara is an interesting example of industrial architecture and it has a sea turtles clinic inside the building. Liliana led in a very inspiring visit, where she taught us the almost mystic role of the rais alongside the different phases of tuna production. With the songs she shared with us, it was almost possible to feel the experience of the tonnara and its meaning not only for the industry but for the community as a whole. Absolutely recommended if you are in Favignana!Written September 10, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Sandy SAlbuquerque, NM1,047 contributionsMonreale deserves most of an afternoon. The mosaics are dazzling and impressively detailed, especially considering that they’d been wrought in 1123. Some seem almost whimsical in their depictions of Biblical stories, especially those from the Hebrew Scriptures.Written November 7, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Adrian GBucharest, Romania610 contributionsThis is a true gem of a building. Initially a Greek temple with doric columns, it was then a Byzantine church, a mosque, a Norman church and now it is a Catholic cathedral. The Greek columns can still be clearly seen both outside and inside.
It reminded me of Mezquita of Cordoba, which is a cathedral constructed over a mosque.Written December 18, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. So many fun facts about the Opera House that were both interesting and fun to know. Highly recommend !Written February 20, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- CynicorenBeersheba, Israel2,582 contributionsHundreds of skeletons are displayed, some in better, so in worse condition.
Most of them are dressed up according to their time, so it's interesting from that perspective, as there are dead from all walks of life.
Obviously, makes you think about your own mortality and life.
Taking pictures is not allowed.
The site is off the beaten path, so you have to take a bus (15-20 minutes drive from the city center), and walk in a strange route to get there.Written December 17, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. One of the few church’s anywhere where both Greek Orthodox and Roman Catholic services and rites can be held. The cost is only €2 and well worth a visit.Written January 2, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Susan KNew York City, NY825 contributionsWe visited this free UNESCO World Heritage site-as part of our walking tour of Cefalu. It looks like a fortified castle. It was built between 1131 and 1240 by the Norman King Roger 11. The attached cloister is the oldest in Sicily. IT is opened every day from 8-12:45 and 3:30-5:45.Written March 3, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - duhozBeroun, Czech Republic6,315 contributionsSecond largest monastery in Europe but today university. It has most valueable library, probably you can see it as part of guided tour. I just walked around on my own the huge complex and cloisters as I have not time to take about 90 minutes guided tour I reccommend to visit the next door church and climb up to cupola at the high 62 meters.Written November 2, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Ros0604London, UK291 contributionsThis was a fascinating visit - really interesting history and building, filled with lovely things. Excellent tour. Wonderful that it is still a home, lived in and loved. Highly recommend this visit. Allow time to find it - fairly neat the cathedral but in the backstreetsWritten September 23, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - NataliaD DCambridge, UK296 contributionsAmazing church, 100% worth a visit. Very unusual and beautiful decorations, takes your breath away. Only 2 euro per ticket / or 6 euro including a small but lovely museum. A must visit in Palermo!Written March 15, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- AMsaysThornhill, Canada4,121 contributionsThe building was built over Roman Baths in 1086 but since then it has gone through many renovations, rebuilt mainly because of natural disasters and aggressions. It has been presided over by the French, Swabians, Normans but initially by Byzantine forces who it is believed absconded with artifacts from here that ended up at Istanbul’s Hagia Sofia mosque. The outer façade is topped by a bell tower. Inside there are the usual religious artifacts, statues and beautiful artwork. I was very impressed with the striking flooring.Written February 8, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Mary-Theresa M10 contributionsSilvia, our guide, was amazing! Her English was flawless! She explained the whole process of making Marsala wine, the 3 main kinds, and what to pair them with. We then sampled them. She answered all our questions about the purchase and shipping, too. A great time was had by all! Thank you!Written September 19, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
