What travelers are saying
- WonderingNutAuburn, WA28 contributionsWe climbed in, up and out of several of Mount Etna craters, and it was truly amazing. The views, the hike, the adventure I would gladly do it all again and again.Written March 9, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - duhozBeroun, Czech Republic6,315 contributionsSecond largest monastery in Europe but today university. It has most valueable library, probably you can see it as part of guided tour. I just walked around on my own the huge complex and cloisters as I have not time to take about 90 minutes guided tour I reccommend to visit the next door church and climb up to cupola at the high 62 meters.Written November 2, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - AMsaysThornhill, Canada4,121 contributionsMain city square flanked by City Hall (Palazzo degli Elefanti) and the Cathedral of Saint Agatha. 3 major streets enter the square giving it a unique position in the city. It is Catania’s heartbeat. During my time here, I found the elephant fountain and some impressive buildings. There was a lot of pedestrian traffic through here as it is also on the way to Catania’s famous fish market.Written February 8, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - AMsaysThornhill, Canada4,121 contributionsThe building was built over Roman Baths in 1086 but since then it has gone through many renovations, rebuilt mainly because of natural disasters and aggressions. It has been presided over by the French, Swabians, Normans but initially by Byzantine forces who it is believed absconded with artifacts from here that ended up at Istanbul’s Hagia Sofia mosque. The outer façade is topped by a bell tower. Inside there are the usual religious artifacts, statues and beautiful artwork. I was very impressed with the striking flooring.Written February 8, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - robinn669Farnham, UK443 contributionsAn extraordinary place and largely unknown to the great Sicilian public apart from the disinterested and distracted Italian school children forced to walk around but more engaged with their phones This is an in-depth examination of Operation Husky when the Americans and British raced around the island to see who could secure Messina first. The equipment, the visuals, the reenactments are first class- presentation is usually an Italian thing but this time they've combined it with substance. It's a beautiful space tucked away near the railway station- and takes a bit of finding but completely worth it. I hope there is money to maintain this excellent museumWritten January 3, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - S EBurgess Hill, UK142 contributionsA wonderful Palazzo in central Catania, very beautiful and interesting. There are several beautiful rooms to explore and wander around, no guide or signage in any of the rooms but there was a guided tour. However we decided just to mooch around ourselves. Lots of photo opportunities and an escape from the heat of the day.Written October 8, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Busker999Tonbridge, UK985 contributionsAmazing to see this place in the middle of the city, well hidden but worth a visit. Better roman theatres in Siciliy but good nonthelessWritten November 10, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Jonathan H23 contributionsAs most say about this spot it is a place for quietness and relaxation. It’s shady and large enough to “lose” a lot of people in to keep that sense of peacefulness.
Safe too - the Carabinieri patrol the outer track by car.Written September 26, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. On the other side there is a sea view, which u usually don't see much from city center. Price was adults is 5 euros.Written March 18, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Thomas KMonte-Carlo, Monaco1,329 contributionsVia Etnea starts at the Duomo Square and lead you to the main shopping in Catania. - LewdogWeymouth, UK17 contributionsA once in a lifetime opportunity, unless you've been to the opera before, which I hadn't, in which case it's probably a pretty average evening out.Written May 20, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - ANGELO VMilan, Italy2,939 contributionsThe Ursino castle in Catania was built by Frederick II of Swabia during the 13thI century. During the Sicilian Vespers it was the seat of the parliament and later it was the residence of the Sovereigns of Sicily of the Aragonese dynasty including Frederick III. Today it houses the Civic Museum.
The museum is very big, and it houses art pieces from the Greek period to the 18th-19th centuries. Some pieces of modern art in the same rooms as historical art is a questionable choice. Explanations are provided in Italian for all pieces, in English for most of them, and in Spanish for some.
According to me, the best part is the paintings and drawings collection, with pieces by artists such as El Greco, Luis de Morales, Mathias Stomer, Francesco Solimena, Mattia Preti, Jusepe de Ribeira, Michele Rapisardi, Girolamo Induno, Sebastian Ittar, and the only existing copy of the precious "Nativity" altarpiece by Caravaggio, stolen in Palermo and never found again.
The archaeological section is very interesting, too, whereas the numismatic collection is not enjoyable: the coins are in the dark and not very visible in the absence of light.Written April 29, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The church has frescoes by the Catanese painter Giuseppe Rapisardi, and a main altar in colorful marbles.
From the top of the church there is a superb view over the city of Catania and mount Etna. There are 147 steps to the top.Written April 29, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. All woes fade away. Much recommended.Written December 12, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.

His favorite part is the greenhouse, we saw his favorite fish there, he likes recording water movements too, we really enjoyed our moment, if I can find some photos I will share!
