What travelers are saying
- RandallSan Diego, CA991 contributionsThe food was far better than anticipated. The service was solid and the performers were very good to great. A superb evening where we were made to feel like we as guests were truly appreciated. A fun time for sure.Written November 5, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Polaroids & Drinkin StoriesUnited States1,507 contributionsWas here recently to see Agent Orange (yup they're still around.) I guess there was an original location and now this one. It's kinda like the CBGBs of San Diego. There's a smaller room and main room. Sound was good, crowd was fun. Main band went on around 11PM I guess. Apparently the neighborhood used to be pretty bad but it's all being gentrified. Hopefully they don't price this club out like they did CBGBs. Great place to see a band.Written December 19, 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Meredith HCanberra, Australia168 contributionsI was in town and saw that Finest City were hosting the San Diego Improv Festival. Being an improviser myself, I had to go along and check it out.
The session had three shows which were all entertaining and well executed. If I could fit another show in while I'm here I would be back!Written February 17, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The live music and ceremony played it adds a vibe into the place. Night time is the best where the weather is good and fabulous lighting on the iconic shell.
Good to visit when you joke or walk along the marina.Written July 13, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Usually I'm a ballet aficionado andvsymphony but honestly I don't know much about modern dance except the name Alvin Albee and Twyla Tharp and Isadora Duncan so I don't want to miss a chance here. The theatre reminds me of the beautifully refurbished ( Canon) -and Wintergarden gems in Toronto, but this one is very New York and intimate. I like that.
There are three sets search about 20 minutes with 20 minute intermissions. The first is a collection of country dances with do-si- doh combinations, lifts and moves. Perfect for the fall season. Costumes are bright, dancing appears to be primarily balletic with surprising releases, flexed instead of pointed toes, energetic moves between pairs and quartets.
The next is based on music from Beethoven, the moves similar to the first but more complicated and entwined.
The last called Brahms Paganini is my favourite as a solo dancer excels in his dance, riveting the audience with the contrasts in the dance style. The next section follows with the ensemble who work together and apart, combining, balancing, juxtaposing one another. They are unique( to me), elegant, humorous, striking and I cannot take my eyes off them.
This is an amazing show, good for absolutely all ages and I reflect that my 8 year old grandson might have been fascinated by the dance. There are in deed a few young children here, as quiet and dazzled as the more mature.
I feel exuberant and somehow hopeful leaving the theatre so glad I have been a party to such a great performance.
My only thought is that music performed live might have increased the pleasure but then the focus might have been tipped towards the well known playing of the pieces as opposed to the dancers on stage. I like the absence of a set but tapped music gave me pause.
Thank you La Jolla music society for this wonderful evening.Written October 23, 2016This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The paella is not the best I have tried, it seems the seasoning is a bit spicier than Spain's, but still good.Written October 24, 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Harriet WManchester, CT92 contributionsI attended a live performance of the play Trouble in Mind by Alice Childress (1916-1994). As a past season-ticket holder of the Old Globe, I enjoyed seeing a professional performance in a tiny, low-budget, strip mall on El Cajon Boulevard. Don't let the outside fool you. Inside is an intimate theatre where every seat in the five rows is prime. If you're a traveler to San Diego, you might find yourself close by on your way to or from Tijuana, or in search of authentic Mexican lunch at a mom 'n pop hole-in-the-wall. The Moxie website says they've been producing "theatre that defies the stereotypes associated with women's work for nearly 10 years" and that they've launched careers and won awards. I believe it. My Thursday-night ticket was $27; refreshments for sale during intermission. Worth the trip east of downtown to the college area neighborhood (San Diego State) filled with 1948-era homes.Written February 27, 2015This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - BerniegalSan Diego, CA11 contributionsThe music was Beautiful.
The Spreckels theater is a treat to see. Older building built in 1927. It has been
refurbished.
The Ballet had two intermissions.
I loved the second act the best. Twenty. Dancers in flowing dresses.
The dancing was very good.
Second time we have been there. Would go again.Written November 8, 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
