As a couple, we had a wonderful experience at the Cesari winery. Everything was excellent from the tour of the cellars, the insightful explanations of the barrelling and ageing process, followed by our tasting session paired with the delicious local cuisine. The sommelier and host, Phillipe, was friendly, informative and couldn't have been more hospitable in providing what was for us a wonderful experience. We could not recommend the tour highly enough, and the beautiful surroundings were the icing on the cake. Thank you so much!

My wife and I were searching for a short day-trip out of Bologna into the country-side where we could have a nice lunch and visit a local winery. We're from California, so we are familiar with our own local wines, but know virtually nothing about Italian wines (apart from Chianti), so this was our opportunity to do a little research and expand our horizons (for educational purposes only, I assure you).

I was principally looking for a small-ish, preferably family-run operation. And we definitely found it in Cantina Barone in Castel San Pietro Terme. We dropped in (without a booking, but during the posted opening hours) and were warmly met by Luigi Barone, the owner. He took us into his tasting room and allowed us to sample his wares. The tastings were gratis, but we did take home two bottles of his Sangiovese and Pignoletto. (We would like to have taken more, but our baggage is already overflowing, so we'll be drinking these here.) Granted, we are not oenophiles of the first order, but to our palates, his wines were very good to excellent. And, ridiculously inexpensive, in my opinion.

Luigi also gave us a quick tour of his small winery and 13-hectare vineyard. We also enjoyed some delicious cherries picked right from his fruit orchard. (He also sells these as well as apricots.) Overall, a lovely time with a gracious host. Luigi's English, while rudimentary, was still better than our Italian. He made a valiant effort to explain his operation, and we got far more out of it than might otherwise have been expected. He very obviously enjoys what he does, and is passionate about his wines.

A very pleasant afternoon out from Bologna, or if you're passing through this part of Emlia Romagna. Cheers to Luigi. Thanks for a delightful visit.
