It is a monument to miners in general.
We saw it in mid-August during our private city tour of Kemerovo. Its author is a famous Soviet sculptor Ernst Neizvestny who later emigrated to US and was immediately labelled "a traitor" by communists. When they went bankrupt with their ideas and practice, he proceeded working for the country he'd left and that huge statue in Kemerovo is one of such examples. It is his gift to the city.
Great piece of art, excellent location, popular place among locals. Symbol of Kemerovo.
Strongly recommended. Nicely illuminated by night.

This is the main public square in the centre of the city and is very easy to find. I've been there at various times of the year and am always amazed by the different things put on: open air traditional Kuzbass goods market, and now everything is getting geared up for the New Year festivities so the council have erected temporary ice hockey and skating rinks, beautiful huge statues of Ded Moroz and his grand-daughter Snegurochka, and a team of experts are mounting fantastic hand-carved ice sculptures. There are a lot of well-maintained climbing frames for small children, and plenty of benches to sit on and watch the day go by. The square has round-the-clock security personnel so it's a great, safe place to visit.

Alexander Pushkin is revered in this country. It would not be an exaggeration to say that he's a real national hero. A poet, a writer, the founding father of modern Russian language.
We saw that statue in mid-August during our private city tour of Kemerovo. Rather small (for a monument), standing in a neat tiny park. A huge parking place somewhat spoils the picture. I'd prefer small cafes substituting it but, as far as I know, city authorities don't think it's a great idea.
Worth spending a couple of minutes of your time.

I must admit I had never heard of Alexey Leonov until I went to teach in Kemerovo state university, but after reading up on the first man to walk in space I was fascinated by his history. He is from the Kemerovo region, and the airport is named after him. There is an exhibition inside on the first floor where you can discover lots of interesting things about one of Russia's greatest, bravest, and highly popular, cosmonauts, plus the actual capsule he returned to earth in is just outside the main entrance.

Vladimir Martemyanov died in a plane crust in 1970 in the age of thirty-three only. He was performing a training flight when g-forces ruined the fuselage, one of the wings was torn off and crushed the pilot's head.
That monument was erected in 2009.
To me it looked rather strange but tastes differ, of course.

Another gobbledygook born by Tripadvisor translator bots...
There's a song from a still popular Soviet cartoon where a small racoon first is frightened by his own reflection in a pond but then a monkey recommends him to smile at that "monster", he does, his reflection smiles back at him and everybody starts to sing - Thanks to a smile a day becomes lighter, thanks to a smile everybody feels warmer inside, both an elephant and a little snail, etc.
We saw that sculpture in mid-August when, while in Kemerovo, we decided to take a stroll along the river Tom' embankment in the downtown. As to me, that Dumbo seemed sort of high and a snail on his trunk was just bluntly stoned. Look at them - normal creatures do not behave that weird way!
    Freakish...
