In the bustling heart of Madrid, where the city's pulse beats loud and fast, lies a verdant oasis of tranquillity and greenery: Parque del Retiro. This sprawling park, a sanctuary for walkers, runners, and those in search of a peaceful escape, became a recurring theme in our Madrid narrative, each visit uncovering new delights.

As we meandered through its expansive pathways, the park revealed itself as a patchwork of nature's artistry and human ingenuity. Each corner, each secluded nook, offered a different taste of serenity or activity. For those looking to indulge in the culinary landscape of Retiro, the park did not disappoint. Sampling the various eating and drinking spots nestled within its embrace became a delightful quest, each offering sustenance and refreshment to complement the natural beauty surrounding us.

One of the park's charming surprises was the sight of sun-bathing turtles, a serene tableau that spoke of the park's ability to be a haven for all forms of life. The soundtrack to our wanderings was provided by the vibrant calls of birds, perhaps parakeets, adding a wild melody to the urban oasis and reminding us of nature's persistence amidst the cityscape.

For the more adventurous, or for those simply seeking a novel way to explore, the park offered cycle carts for hire. These quirky 'things' presented a fun, if slightly unconventional, mode of transportation, adding a dash of whimsy to our explorations.

Parque del Retiro is more than just a park; it's a green lung in the centre of Madrid, a place where nature and city life coalesce in harmonious balance. Whether you're a runner seeking a scenic route, a visitor longing for a breath of fresh air, or simply someone looking to enjoy a moment of peace, Retiro welcomes all.

To anyone finding themselves in Madrid, I urge you to seek out Parque del Retiro. Its vast expanses and hidden gems offer a respite from the urban rush, a slice of nature's bounty amidst the concrete and clamour. It's very nice, indeed.

Huge!! Our group consisted of three family adults with a variety of interests. We arrived early to the Prado and had tickets purchased the previous day. There was a wait in line but we were inside within 15-20 minutes. Look for the long line to know where to enter. We started at the special exhibit on the main floor and then proceeded to view the rest of the museum. The galleries are numbered but we were not aware of that at the beginning. Be sure to start at the beginning to ensure you get to see everything. And to see everything you need to plan to be there for almost the whole day. This museum is large.
It is very impressive. Large, dominant artwork by masters you know. Take sitting breaks as you will need them. We should have rested more.
There are large crowds and the day we were there, there were several large school groups. Very easy to get to lose your group
This is a must see if only for scope of the artwork. You won’t be disappointed..

During our latest jaunt through the vibrant streets of Madrid, the Royal Palace stood majestically on our itinerary, its grandeur calling to us like a beacon of history and opulence. Intent on soaking up every drop of splendour, we approached, only to find our ambitions slightly thwarted by an all-too-familiar foe – the lengthy queue.

Undeterred, we seized the opportunity to admire this architectural marvel from the outside. Through the gates, the palace whispered tales of royalty, history, and artistry, its facade a canvas of intricate designs and stately elegance. The sprawling courtyards, visible from our vantage point, hinted at the magnificence lying just beyond reach. It was a moment of awe, a testament to the enduring allure of Spain's royal heritage, even if just admired from afar.

Yet, the serpentine line of eager visitors served as a gentle reminder of the palace's allure and our underestimation of its draw. The queue, a bustling snake of anticipation, was BIG. So big, in fact, that we chose to let the interior mysteries of the palace remain unexplored mysteries for another day.

Reflections on the visit bring a mix of admiration and a resolve to return, armed next time with a strategy to outsmart the waiting game. Advance tickets, we've learned, are the golden keys to unlocking the secrets of such famed attractions. A lesson in planning that's as royal as the palace itself.

As we bid adieu to the Royal Palace, it remained a majestic highlight on our Madrid map, a place of beauty admired but not yet fully discovered. Our next trip will undoubtedly include a pre-booked passage through its grand doors, in pursuit of the history, art, and royal elegance that await inside.

To fellow wanderers drawn to the splendour of Madrid's Royal Palace, let this be a nudge to plan ahead. The palace's beauty, both inside and out, is an essential chapter in the story of Madrid, deserving of a place on every traveller's tale. Until next time, Royal Palace, when we shall explore beyond your gates.

This is a great small museum. It’s very interesting to see the house and imagine that when Sorolla built it, there was not much else there. The gardens are very peaceful. I didn’t know anything about Sorolla but before going to the museum I researched his life & paintings. He is a master of light and according to a Spanish friend his works set in Valencia reflect the special light of the Mediterranean. Many, many masterpieces. We got there about 11am and it was very crowded. When we left two hours later the line was around the block. We got in for free!!! Don’t know why, maybe free for seniors.

On our exploration through the heart and soul of Madrid, the iconic Plaza Mayor carved itself a special niche in our memories. This grand square, with its rich tapestry of history and vibrant daily life, offered us a glimpse into the city's ever-changing mood, painted across the canvas of its vast expanse.

Our first encounter was under a weeping sky, the rain casting a glossy sheen over the cobblestones, each drop a whisper of stories past. In this moment, Plaza Mayor revealed itself as a tranquil haven, its usual hustle and bustle silenced by the pitter-patter of rain. The empty expanse, bordered by its regal architecture, felt almost surreal, a private viewing granted by the weather’s capricious whims.

Yet, as if by magic, our return under the caress of the sun's rays transformed the square into a bustling stage of life. Tourists, like ourselves, meandered across the square, each step a note in the symphony of languages that filled the air. Stamp sellers and various vendors emerged from the arches and hideaways, each alcove a treasure trove of curiosities, their wares a testament to the square's enduring role as a marketplace through the ages.

The contrast was striking—a sight to behold indeed. From the solemnity of a rain-soaked square to the lively hubbub under the warmth of the sun, Plaza Mayor stood as a testament to the dynamic spirit of Madrid. It was as if the square itself played different characters depending on the weather's script, each performance equally captivating.

Our strolls through Plaza Mayor, both in solitude and amidst the crowd, painted a picture of a place that thrives on contrast. It's a square that wears its history with pride, yet embraces the present with open arms. A place where the past and present meet, offering endless stories to those who walk its grounds.

For anyone wandering the streets of Madrid, Plaza Mayor is a must-visit. It's more than just a square; it's a living, breathing piece of Madrid's heart. Whether bathed in rain or basking in sunshine, it promises a memorable slice of the city's soul. A true sight to behold.

Bright and cheerful, we arrived when it opened at 10am and had a great breakfast. You visit the vendors and choose your preferences to eat at tables in the center. After coffees and tortilla (egg and potato upside down omelette) I confess I had to try a glass of Sangria! Delicious! (It was 5 pm somewhere, right?).

This museum was a wealth of information and artifacts that spanned over time and civilizations.

We only spent about two hours inside but one could surely have stayed longer.

The museum did a great job curating its displays and including lots of details. Signage was in both English and Spanish.

One of my favorites was the Lady of Baza more for its uniqueness but the mosaics room was also quite beautiful to see.

The Debold Temple was located on a small hill in Parque De Oste. It was a short walk from the Palacio Real.

We knew the inside was closed that day so we spent our time waking around the temple itself. I did not realize but security would not let any one near the temple as well. We watched them come out of the temple itself and chase people away.

In the winter, the water that surrounded the temple had been drained but not sure if that also had to do with the drought conditions.

Still a worthwhile visit to see a complete Egyptian temple without needed to travel to Egypt.
