What travelers are saying
- apars0nManchester, UK616 contributionsThe old town of Riga is compact and packed with cobbled streets and interesting buildings.
Lots of cafes and bars to sustain you too.
There are great museums to discover, but the old town is really an area for getting a feel for the history of Riga, whilst wandering and (probably) getting lost in the maze of narrow streets and around the pretty squares.
Look skywards for a feast of fine architecture.Written February 5, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The guide for the English tour was knowledgeable, clear and humorous. Well worth noting the free tour on the last sunday of each month.Written January 29, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Phil RNorth East England41 contributionsWe spent a couple of hours here, bought a few things to bring back and had some tasty food. It has an incredible selection of fresh fruit, veg, fish, meat etc. A must visit!Written February 11, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - MS11M22SUnited Kingdom180 contributionsVery pretty square in Riga with some beautiful architecture to admire. It looks spectacular when it’s all lit up at night too.Written November 9, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - ego1893Stuttgart, Germany49 contributionsNicely done, not a boring museum. It is obvious that the Latvian people have a wish to stress that they are different from Russia, which they explicitly do in this museum. On the other hand they do not omit that some Latvians participated to a certain extent in the Nazi atrocities, which adds credibility to their narrative. Very worthwhile, very educational, good time to spend.Written July 7, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - daveashukBristol, UK701 contributionsBooked on line for English tour, cost €15 for the hour’s tour, so our tour was a bit rushed, when we started 10 minutes late. The maximum group size seems to be 20 people. The building is left as it was, cold, peeling , tatty, but shows the grim conditions the inmates suffered. You get to see the whole of the system from entrance, cells, interrogation room, exercise yard, kitchen to the final execution room. Prior to the tour there is a room with information panels that can be visited for free and videos of survivors tales. It was used for a while as a Latvian police station post independence.Written March 18, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Bread2011Hong Kong, China92 contributionsAccess to tower was inside the St. Peter’s Church. You need to pay for entrance fee for church and tower. It costs €9 per adult. The church itself was just a normal one without any special. Then you can walk up to 3/F of tower for lift to the top. The view over there was gorgeous. You can see 360 view of the city. Though it’s windy and cold on the top, we still stayed until sunset. It’s really a highlight during the visit in Riga.Written March 3, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Pat L3 contributionsSimply an astonishing collection of cars and so many rarities!! Brezhnev's Royce... Russo balt. WOW! WOuld never have thought the museum could hold such vehicles on constant display! Next door there is an active race track too and perhaps at some summer days you can get to visit both in one go. Could be a great set.Written March 6, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- apars0nManchester, UK616 contributionsThe street, and other surrounding streets, highlight the impressive architecture of Riga, where supposedly one third of the buildings in the Centr area are of Jugendstil in appearance.
You will probably get a crick in your neck, and end up taking far more photos than you intended, but this really is an area worth visiting.
Just across the canal from the Powder tower, off Elizabetes Iela (which has many fine buildings too)Written February 5, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - WhinbrookGreater London, UK487 contributionsInteresting museum contained in a meticulously furnished and decorated Art Nouveau apartment. You get to see not only the 'front of house' stuff like the reception rooms and bedrooms but can view the bathroom, wc (made in England!) the kitchen and the maid's room so it is all brought to life.
The basement has an interesting exhibition on the imagined family that might have lived there. It was clever to stand in front of mirrors but to watch live action reflections of each family member checking their appearance before maybe going out or receiving guests.
There were also numerous period decorative items and pieces of furniture on display Small Art Nouveau light fittings hanging from the ceiling of one of the rooms was an interesting display.
The museum staff were dressed in period costume and you could try on certain articles of clothing too.
The entrance and building staircase were also very impressive to see.Written September 24, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The golden domes topped by the familiar Orthodox crosses are really a sight to behold!
I did venture inside, but as soon as I saw the sign that women must borrow a headscarf AND a skirt from the desk next to the candles, I reversed directions. At that point I was super tired after having already walked about for the previous 3 hours and just could not be bothered to fiddle around with a skirt.
I only became aware of the ‘No photos allowed’ directive by reading the reviews of other visitors.
Still, well worth a visit even just to see the beautiful exterior of the cathedral.Written October 21, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
