Super interesting and exciting display of nebulas, galaxies, swarms of baby and young stars through two telescopes even when the weather conditions were not the best.

We decided to make this a stop on our way back from Lagos to Lisbon. So glad we did what a wonderful surprise- the 360’ views were incredible and it truly took you back in time. Love our visit!

Monsaraz is a 'must visit' place if you are exploring Portugal. Located on a hill, not far from the Spanish border, it is like a village frozen in time. Cars are not allowed to enter, but there is sufficient parking outside the village and a short walk (uphill) to the main entry gate. The streets are all cobbled and there is an abundance of things to visit and see. There are a variety of restaurants, mostly Alentejo cuisine, some of them offering vegetarian and vegan alternatives.

We drove by the Convento da Orada a couple of times and stopped on both sides of it, looking for some sort of activity. We saw nothing and it appears that it’s been quiet here for a number of years.

It’s a huge building, and, as they say, “if these walls could talk...”

I, for one, couldn’t understand what the walls were saying as I don’t speak Portuguese.

We stayed a couple of nights in Monsaraz. When we left we turned left and wandered around looking signs to direct us to one of the many that were around. We drove down a dirt road to find us all alone with the stone seems to radiant energy.

There is a pelourinho in almost every Portuguese city, town and some villages. It is a symbol of the municipal power of the place and criminals were usually tied or chained to it when punished. It is argued that pelourinhos are Roman in origin, as Roman settlements had a pillar for much the same purpose. The marble Pelourinho de Monsaraz is located in the main square, which you will find 100 metres to your left after entering the main gateway into the town.

The Casa da Inquisicao provides a background of the Jewish faith in the history of Monsaraz. Some of the information is presented in an “opinionated” perspective, and you may not agree, or be aware of, what you read regarding the displays.

Buying a ticket to the Museu do Fresco grants you admission to House of the Inquisition. It’s just down the street. Make sure you see the entire venue; you have to go up stairs on the outside to see it all.

This is a small exhibition; give it a few minutes.

This Menir is located not far from the city of Monsaraz in the countryside. Despite the fact that there are no walls nor fences around, it is in good conditions and you can visit it at any time.

The cistern is only viewable through a metal grill in a wall. There is no illumination inside so it is not possible to se much. The cistern at Marvão offers far better viewing. Just beyond the cistern are some steps you can climb which takes you to a terrace which offers views over the surrounding countryside.

During our stay, went to the church to see it. A very typical one for the time period. It has a lot of history in the area. Was able to attend mass while we where there.

We drove down dirt roads and along highways to find them. This one was just off the highway and easy to walk to.
