The Assumption Cathedral of Smolensk dominates its skyline. It is the cathedral where future Patriarch Kirill used to serve prior to his enthronement. During the Great Patriotic War it was spared from destruction by German general Gurderian. I visited it as an ordinary layman. Simply by walking up the high steps and entering the Cathedral in awe. The interior is absolutely fascinating.

I can proudly brag about covering the whole length of the fortress wall. I did not do it at once. It took me several years to do that. In the past some sections were neglected. Anyone could climb over there and walk amid piles of garbage. This time I was pleasantly surprised to see a well-kept wall.

This park would be so much better if the water didn't look so icky. You can rent boats, watch people from a bench, see a war memorial, etc...

The gallery was surprised by a rich collection of paintings, including the famous painters - Aivazovsky, Shishkin, Serov, etc. For the regional city is more than nice. Exposure of the pictures also looks very professional. Section of Western European painting seems more weak, his absence did not affect the level of the gallery. The same can be said of the ancient art.

This sculpture looks German, and in fact it is .. Prussian. It used to be in the East Prussian estate of Hermann Goering. After the WWII the Red Army took it away and put it in the center of Smolensk. The sculpture itself has a long story. It is believed that the German kaiser shot it during hunting in the East Prussian woods.

I am a history buff, as you know. So I couldn't miss the Thunder Tower during my short visit to Smolensk. It is situated in the south-western part of the fortress. It is called thunder because it used to be a powderhouse. Now it is a military museum. The entrance is from the ground floor (literally) from the inner side of the fortress. The museum covers the military history of the middle ages mainly. From one of the upper levels one can enter a short stretch of the fortress wall.

This park with a French sounding name (that has nothing to do with French) is conveniently located in the heart of Smolensk. In 1917 it witnessed the social upheavals of two revolutions - rallies. After the Great Patriotic War a trophy statues were placed here from Hermann Goering's estates in East Prussia. I walked through the Blonye garden several times, I couldn't miss it. But I never stopped and reflected upon the surroundings, which I miss now.

I can certainly agree with one the previous contributors. It is a very detailed coverage of the events happened in Smolensk nearly 100 years ago. This is the biggest single building museum in Smolensk. It is situated in the heart of the city. Right near the Blonye garden on the pedestrian street. It has three floors. The first floor - to the First World War, Revolution and Civil War. The second - Great Patriotic War. The third temporary exhibits.
