Frankfurt Airport (FRA, or, in German, Flughafen Frankfurt am Main or Rhein-Main-Flughafen) is the busiest airport in Germany and the third-busiest airport in Europe. It serves as a hub for Condor, Lufthansa and Lufthansa CityLine. More than 100 airlines fly into and out of Frankfurt, offering non-stop flights to 275 destinations in 111 countries in Europe, Africa, Asia, North America and South America.
Among the most busiest travel routes from Frankfurt: Berlin, Hamburg and Munich, in Germany; London, Oslo and Vienna, in Europe; and Singapore, Dubai, Washington DC and Bangkok.
Few low-cost carriers fly from FRA. Those that do include Germanwings (with seasonal flights to Heringsdorf), TUIfly GmbH (with flights to cities including Agadir, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Tenerife) and Vueling (with flights to Barcelona). If you’re looking for cheap airfares, be sure to include these airlines in your search.
Many Frankfurt-area residents and visitors who are seeking low airfares instead opt to fly out of other nearby airports.
Frankfurt-Hahn Airport (HHN), which is located about 120 km (75 miles) from Frankfurt, is a mini-hub for Ryanair and also served by SunExpress and Wizz Air. Cheap flights are available to destinations including Dublin, Lisbon, London and Budapest.
Cologne Bonn Airport (CGN), which is located about 180 km (110 miles) from Frankfurt, is a hub for low-cost carrier Germanwings and served by several other airlines that offer inexpensive fares, including easyJet, Flybe, TUIfly and Wizz. Popular destinations include Berlin, Munich, Palma de Mallorca and Antalya.
Stuttgart Airport (STR), which is located about 200 km (125 miles) from Frankfurt, is a hub for Condor, SunExpress Deutschland and TUIfly. Other low-cost carriers include Flybe, Germanwings and Vueling. Destinations include Brussels, Barcelona and London.
Baden Airpark (FKB) is also a mini-hub for Ryanair. Low-cost carrier Germanwings also operates from the airport, as do several other airlines. Destinations include Hamburg, London and Malaga.
Thanks to the range of international flights available from FRA, it’s no surprise that Frankfurt-area residents and visitors are well-traveled.
