The White Swan Hotel in Stratford garners praise for its prime location and inviting atmosphere, with comfortable, tastefully decorated rooms often mentioned by guests. Amenities like the selection of food and drink and overall cleanliness receive positive remarks, though there have been occasional lapses during peak times. Service experiences vary, with reports of both friendly attentiveness and slower, less professional encounters. While the charm of the hotel is a draw, some travelers question the value, pointing to overpriced services and issues with room size and noise.

Excellent stay in a very comfortable hotel with charming and helpful staff members. Breakfast was lovely with quite a good selection. Dinner in the evening was quite good but the menu didn't change on the 3 nights we stayed and was a little on the "pub grub" for its offerings.

Dear Mickrog24, Thank you for your review. I am delighted to see that you enjoyed an excellent stay, and that you found the hotel to be comfortable. The team will be equally happy to see that you found them to be charming and helpful Our Restaurant menu will generally change every few days, but usually has Chef special dishes daily, also. I will pass on your feedback to the team in the kitchen, and also about the lovely Breakfasts. We hope we can welcome you back in the future. Regards, Sol

Stayed here on our visit to see Shakespeare's hometown. This places feels more like an inn that a traditional "hotel," but you can tell the staff takes great pride in providing guests with an excellent experience. The rooms don't scream luxury by any means (nor should they in a small town), but are instead more modest, as if you were staying at a kind friend or relative's house. Breakfast selection was huge and I have to admit even better than our hotel in London. The dining room makes you feel as if you are in a medieval cottage with the dark walls, wooden beams, and stone fireplace. We ate dinner here one night out of convenience - food wasn't anything special, but we sat in the courtyard with a pint and it was pretty pleasant. Best thing about this place is the location - walkable from the train station, and also to the center of town where the attractions/shops/bars are. Probably one of the best places to stay in Stratford.

Dear AustintoBoston, Thank you for your review. It is truly humbling to read such kind words about our beautiful, historic hotel, and especially that you could tell that my team and I take great pride in the place, and in providing the best levels of service. I would point out that each of our 41 rooms is different in size, shape and decor each offering differing levels of luxury touches. The location is certainly one to be envied by other venues, as we are so close to most things people need in the town. Our Breakfast is becoming a thing of "Tripadvisor legend"! so many positive comments, and we thank you for yours! I hope we can welcome you back in the future. Regards, Sol

Beautiful hotel with great staff and lots of lovely extras. Amazing room with such a comfy roll top bath. Welcomed with a chocolate brownie and a complimentary gin and tonic. Home made biscuits on reception which were delicious. Amazing evening meal. So tasty. Would definitely go back.

We stayed in the hotel for just one night (27th Feburary) and were very pleased with our small but very quiet and comfortable room. Reception was also excellent, and the car park very close by extremely convenient. We booked a pre-theatre dinner: when we arrived we were shown to a table and given water and menus, but not offered an aperitif. Then nothing happened for 15 minutes or so! I went to the bar to complain and after a little more time a waiter appeared, saying that he had not been told that we were in the restaurant. I ordered a beefburger; the waiter said he thought they were unavailable, but after a time returned to say that was ok. My wife was offered Hendrick's or Tanqueray for a g&t, but then it turned out that there was no Hendrick's. Meanwhile people at the table next to us wanted to order a trout dish - but there was no trout. (Does it not come from the freezer?). They also wanted a glass of chardonnay, but there was apparently no chardonnay either (surely that cannot be true??). In due course our food came - it was ok without being in any way outstanding, and we did not feel that it was great value for money. Naturally we went down to breakfast the following morning full of trepidation after our evening experience, but we found a complete contrast! The (completely different) staff were pleasant and the service was expert and very efficient, the food really excellent - could not be better in any way. So we'd recommend going for the B&B, but take your evening meal elsehwhere!

Dear James_M190776, Thank you for your review. I am delighted to see that you were very pleased with your room, and that the reception team team looked after you efficiently. I was a little concerned at reading your review of the Restaurant service, so have spoken to people in the front of house team, and the manager on duty at the time you were with us. Thomas, the server has been with us for around 12 years and is ordinarily very efficient. It seems there was a breakdown in communication somewhere as he was not made aware any guests were in the restaurant as it was fairly early in the evening. We only use the finest, freshest ingredients, and I can assure you that Trout is not frozen, we only get a fish delivery twice per week and had sold out pending the next delivery. Simon, the manager on duty advises me he went around the restaurant several times, and checked with guests all was okay, and received no communication to the contrary. It pleases me that your experience at Breakfast was much better, and to the levels i expect, and that are normally executed throughout the hotel. I can assure you on a future visit you will see the Dining experience is back to usual. Until then, Regards Sol

I am my deeply disappointed regarding our recent stay at the White Swan Hotel. I made a reservation for Sunday 11th feb and encountered several issues during our stay. Although I brought these concerns to the attention of the receptionist in the morning, I have yet to receive any follow-up as promised. I then emailed and have had no response. We then called and were told that someone would get back to us… they still haven’t, despite weeks have passed, which leaves me no option but to write an honest review here. I had planned a surprise getaway for my partner and had hoped for a flawless experience, especially considering the reputation of the White Swan Hotel. However, our room had numerous issues, including hair in the bath, inside-out sheets, a sticker from someone's shoe on the bed (which I left on the bedside table), a dripping shower throughout the night (requiring us to place a towel in the shower for some sleep), and an early morning delivery disturbance around 6:30 am. Despite turning off the heating, the room was uncomfortably hot, necessitating us to keep the window open. These are all issues I wasn’t going to bring up with staff, as I am aware we are all human and mistakes happen! However, the most distressing aspect of our stay was the disruptive repair work being conducted in the room adjacent to ours during the early hours of the morning. We were awakened by sounds resembling someone working on the plug socket behind our headboard, followed by loud drilling directly above us. The entire wall shook, leaving us completely startled. When guests choose to stay for an evening, they rightfully expect a peaceful night's rest, which unfortunately was not the case for us. The receptionist mentioned that we had initially been assigned a different room upon our arrival, but we were subsequently moved back to the original room. It raises concerns whether this decision was influenced by the knowledge of ongoing construction work in the neighboring room. Regardless, it reflects a significant lapse in communication. For this reason I felt like I had to raise my concerns to the hotel staff. Overall, I am deeply upset and disappointed by the experience we had during our stay at the White Swan Hotel. I do not feel like our experience reflects the price I paid. Unfortunately I would not recommend staying here.

Dear 431jedv, Thank you for your review. As I mention in many of my responses, I personally respond to all reviews as it gives me an insight into the experiences of our guests. I apologise for the delayed response, I have been away from the business on annual leave, which should have been explained to you. I would love the opportunity to discuss these things directly and will contact you directly as many of the things you have mentioned do not meet my expected standards. Regards, Sol

Stayed in the DoubleTree nearby & stumbled across the White Swan. Really fantastic food - we had two great vegetarian dishes. Beer, wine, service and ambiance also fabulous. And our springer spaniel was welcome too. Thanks everyone, we will return.

Beautiful, historic building within walking distance of Stratford town center. The room was well presented and had everything we needed. Yes, it was small, but that was what we booked at the cheaper rate, a small room. We ate in the hotel in the evening and had an excellent meal. Good value for money.

Dear Martin R Thank you for your review. We are indeed in a beautiful building within walking distance of the majority of things people want to see when visiting Stratford! I was happy to see that you found your room to be well presented, with everything you needed. Each of our 41 rooms are different ins size, shape and/or decor and even our smaller rooms had everything you needed, but still offered at a cheaper price, as you mentioned. I know the Chef and his tam will be happy to see you ate with us and that you found the meal to be excellent. We hope we can welcome you back to stay with us in the future. Regards, Sol

We booked this very last minute after our original hotel elsewhere was completely unfit for purpose. They were so friendly and welcoming! Special mention to the blonde lady on reception and the young chap who waited on us (apparently normally the bartender). The hotel is absolutely beautiful, staff attentive and polite and the food was delicious! Can’t wait to come back.

Stay there a few years ago and the stay was very pleasant. How things have changed. Staff are very unpolite, unwelcoming, not very helpful at all. Seems like they can’t be bothered. We booked a grand double room which was very nice with breakfast. Full English breakfast was very minimal and not very nice at all for the money we paid, evening, meal of fish and chips, very expensive, very small Porstionand I’m not what it said on the menu

Dear Mark C Thank you for your review. I am sorry that you found the hotel to be expensive, we feel that for a 4 star hotel, offering what we offer that we are value for money. I was very surprised and saddened to hear your comments about the staff, especially as the overwhelming majority of reviews we get mostly praise the team for friendliness and professionalism - perhaps you would be kind enough to contact me to give more detail as to your experience? All of the team are trained to check back mid-meal to ensure all is well, and if there was a problem with your Fish and Chips or Breakfast they would have been delighted to have rectified this for you to ensure you were happy. Regards Sol

The hotel itself is a lovely building and in a very convenient location for the shops, river and Shakespeare's house. We booked two rooms for one night, a Character and a Grand room. The rooms were actually quite nice, big beds, wooden beams, quirky features and both rooms were fairly spacious. The bathrooms were quite grand with baths in both and big shower cubicles (downsides: a little bit of mould in the shower and wobbly toilet seats). But the biggest downside...neither bathroom/toilet had a door, only a curtain where the door should be! I know it's probably due to the fact it's a grade 2 listed building and certain changes can't be made, however, I feel this should be listed in the advertised room details . I would have chosen a different hotel If I'd have known about the curtain. If you are happy sitting on the throne two steps away from your roomie making a cup of tea, with just a curtain between you, then this is for you. Prudish as it sounds, I like a door on a bathroom! Some things just need a bit of privacy if you know what I mean💩. Moving on from the curtain....breakfast was ok, not huge portions, but that suited us just fine. There were pastries , juices etc and it was plentiful. The eating area/pub area is really lovely, so we didn't mind the slow-ish service at all. We've stayed in several other hotels in Stratford-upon-Avon over the last couple of years, this one is a lovely building, however, it didn't quite hit the spot for us and we wouldn't stay again (mainly due to the curtain!).

Dear deni46, Thank you for your review. I am delighted that you thought the hotel was lovely, and convenient for most of the things people want to see in Stratford. As you stayed two nights in two different rooms, you will be aware they are different. In fact, each of our 41 bedrooms is different be it in size, shape or decor. There are a small number of rooms where there are heavy curtains instead of doors separating the bathroom space, which is indeed because the building is listed,, and we are not allowed to make structural alterations. On a future stay, please request a room with a door - there are plenty! We would be delighted to welcome you back. Regards Sol
