Of all the many lodging options on this trip, this one is the best. It scores highest marks in every category, from location to meals to service. It is near a busy shopping arcade. Just down the incline is a foot bath next to a mechanical clock which has moving parts on the hour. Many people stood around it to view the action. The arcade is interesting too. I bought a bag of clementines -- very sweet, 400yen/KG. The onsen is so relaxing and no one there except for a father and young son. We were in room # 1503 in an annex connected to the main building by a long corridor. No English television channels, huge balcony with view, and 2 Western-style twin beds. Dinner was in a private structure next to the river -- Kawaseki. Getting down there from the ryokan was not smooth. We had total privacy. The food was brought down by large bento boxes filled with seafood, soup, side dishes. So delicious. The newspaper is delivered to the room. The breakfast was just as wonderful as the dinner. Too bad we stayed only one night. This is the only lodging I wish we could have stayed longer.

The visit started with a disappointment, the main reason for selecting this hotel was the rooms with a balcony facing the garden. When we arrived we did get a room with a balcony, however facing the busy road next to the garden. When complaining we got moved one room closer to the garden, with a view of the garden but still could hear and see the road. The room is a combination of western, beds, and Japanese, the tatami sitting area. Quite spacious, good size bathroom and seperate toilet. Breakfast has choice of Japanese or western, both come as a set menu, which were good. One night we opted for the japanes kaiseki diner, an elaborate selection of japanese dishes. Very good quality, which comes at a price. Service is top notch. Location is just around the corner from the onsen, and there is a tram stop close by.

Large elegant hotel-ryokan right next to Dogo Onsen. Funaya has its own baths, as well. Room was traditional, ample size, with a balcony sitting area. As is often the custom, a kimono-clad server was assigned to us for the 2-day stay. She served dinner and breakfast in the bedroom. No matter how many times we've stayed in such ryokans, having that experience is fresh and inspiring. We rate the food top-notch, kaiseki style.

We spent 2 nights in dogo onsen area and stayed in Funaya. Hotel room is Traditional Japanese style, familiar to me and enjoyed the big space. Everyday breakfast time and evening time they will arrange or collect the futon, and had nice sleep in their futon! Breakfast is nice, tried one day Japanese and one day western, good. And the onsen, of course onsen! Lovely onsen and also nice outdoor onsen, with massage chairs in rest area, I do love Japanese onsen. Very close to bus station, worth a stay.

I have been first time and I liked it . Even the Japonese style room for European like me is acceptable. My husband is not so happy sleeping on the floor ... as experience is fine ! Two night is fine... no more But is well located and permits to use the thermal spa with I recommend.

We had decided to splurge on our final day of 3 in Shikoku and chose this hotel due to its high ratings and website. Although the room was quite nice and overall service decent, we were very disappointed in especially the dinner dining experience. The ryokan we stayed the night before in Takamatsu was half the cost and heads and shoulders above in terms of service and personal attention. For the rate a hotel of this reputation charges, expectations for a dining experience are very high on the guests' end. There was no welcome and no staff when we entered the rather mundane dining area. The dining room itself resembled a simple family restaurant. This started us off on the wrong foot because we were made to stand in the entrance like idiots while staff hurried about. The food itself was subpar for the cost, in particular the main course. I know quality wagyu beef and this was not that. We ultimately were so disappointed we left without finishing the course and went out for food in the village. Breakfast was decent. Nothing to have a parade about, but passable and well done. We did vocalize our disappointment and one of the managers personally apologized and we were given some very nice towels made by the very famous Imabari towel company. A local prized industry. They were very kind and this did make up for the experience to some degree and allowed us to leave on good terms. The final evening meal however was disappointing and it more or less put a damper on the whole experience of Matsuyama and the Dogo onsen area. On the plus side, our room was quite nice with very good quality beds, bedding, towels, and it included an in room hinoki wood bathtub with natural hot spring water piped in. Certainly one of the nicer rooms I've stayed it. Over all, we were happy to receive the nice towel gesture and enjoyed the room, however we do not have a desire to return to this hotel nor the Dogo onsen area. I hope our experience was a fluke and not the norm.

I really loved this hotel for its rooms which are a blend of traditional Japanese (tatami, futon) and Western beds. The bathrooms and facilities were very good, and the staff extremely helpful, even if their English was average. The location is also excellent, and two dinners there were very fine for hotel food.

Spent two nights in this Ryokan/hotel near the Dogo Onsen. There was a problem with our booking and the staff were very efficient at trying to resolve the issue. We had a choice of western style breakfast or Japanese. Fabulous. We had an evening meal - the best food so far. Brilliant. Service from all the staff was first class and the room with our own onsen beautiful. Would most definitely recommend this hotel. A gem. Loved the Dogo Onsen area and Matsuyama. A relaxing couple of days. Thank you.
