Meals were quite expensive at the Hotel Ranga, as in most of Iceland, but the food, ambience, and service were superb. We did not have a car so got a ride to the Lava Center and Saga Center in town which were well worth visiting (especially the Lava Center) and they had more reasonable, simple fare. Have a wonderful time -Iceland was amazing and otherworldly!
Suites have balcony river view and are lovely. It is difficult to fish in Iceland, if you email the hotel they can send you the name of the outfitter they recommend for fishing. While it looks like it would be easy to just walk to the river and start fishing, they do not have rods for rent and there are many regulations. Enjoy your trip to Iceland!
The hotel does have an observatory with two working telescopes (not sure the type) that are pretty large - they looked a little larger than the type of telescopes that the astronomers use for the star parties in Marfa, TX when they come down from the McDonald Observatory. The third telescope was to be repaired. On clear nights, the hotel hosts an astronomer who operated the telescopes and provided information about the night sky over Iceland. Maybe 10 guests joined the group - so it was like having a very small, personal star party with a host who was a great story teller as well as an astronomer. You'd have to check with the hotel to see if the telescopes were ever available for guest use - but this was one of the most magical parts of our trip to Iceland.
