Although the rooms give a slightly outdated feeling, the overall charm and fine food contributed to a great stay. The hotel is near the small city of Appingedam and near quite some Romanesque and Hothich churches.

We really enjoyed our stay. After a nice walk we sat down with a glas of wine with a nice sunset followed bij a delicious meal. Everything was perfect: the service, food, room, price/quality and Gerda is the best host ever! Despite the Covid restrictions we had a great time.

We spent 3 nights here for our anniversary and were in Room 6 which unknown to us was the 'Bridal Suite'. A lovely room with lots of Character with a modern bathroom. We dined in 2 evenings and the cooking was excellent. There were 3 dining rooms and they are happy to seat you in the one of your choice. We particularly liked the pork in roquefort sauce and the cod. In the morning was a good buffet that started the day well. We didn't feel a need for lunch after that. The area is picturesque and good for walking. The staff were absolutely superb with us. Very friendly and informative. We certainly can highly recommend the this hotel and will come again.

This is where I spent my first night in the Netherlands, and thought all hotels and restaurants will be so nice. Boy I was in for a surprise the next night I got to Amsterdam. Aristocratic milieu, compared to what awaited in the capital... :D

When visiting the North Netherland do not forget to visit this hotel from 16th century. It is spectacular and very unique hotel, see pictures on google. Hotel is located outside of the city Appingedam that is called as Venice of the nord. Hotel has one most buetiful room for honeymoners, I reccomend it room number 6. Unbelievable place. Hotel received many rewards incuding for Chef and his excellent skills. Do not forget to try local traditional "mustard soup"

We spent a great time in Ekenstein. We enjoyed the dinner, excellent breakfast, with lots of fresh fruit, freshly squeezed orange and grapefruit juices. Since we had a small problem with hot water on one day, we were very generously (over)compensated by the owner. Very good bikes can be used for free and I would really advise to explore the environment by bike. Only one thing: household staff should pay more attention to cleaning services, since we found some spiderwebs and dust in the room as well as on the stairwell.

Came here for a weekend to celebrate an anniversary and we love it to bits! It is a hotel-restaurant estate to the north-east of Groningen - so not a place you'd easily bump into, but well worth the detour. It offers the comfort and peace and quiet of by-gone days and - for the price we paid for an arrangement including dinner - all very affordable. The cook and his team do an excellent dinner and pride themselves in both quality and presentation. The breakfast is ample to sustain you for another day of cycling (in our case) and rooms are fine. So, whether your cyclists as we were, motorcyclists, classic car enthusiasts (we saw them all..) or just out for a bit of R&R, this is a lovely place and it will see us again for sure. Should you want to visit Groningen, there is a train station 8km away and the train runs straight into the centre of Groningen and will bring you there in less than 30 minutes. Beats finding a parking spot - I can assure you. Lastly, waking up to birds, many birds, thousands of birds was quite different from home - that's for sure....

The hotel was recommended by locals. it turned out to be quite special. The "feel": is more that of an estate with hotel benefits, lovely rooms, great food and a caring staff (we left an important document behind and the owner went way, way beyond what would be expected in her attempt to return it - successfully). You will have a great overnight or destination extended stay.

we were there with a group of about 20 people. The hotel is a beautiful house, especially during day with view on the beautiful gardens. The rooms are in a new building, kind of motel joined to the old building, small but is was ok. and no noise from other rooms. Cleanliness might be better and with carpet on the floor and as they accept dogs, you never know if there was a dog in the room before you, and you might get allergic. But just tell it before booking and they will surely do their best. The cooking was also very good. We just enjoyed our stay. There is no lift, so if this is a problem, just ask for a room downstairs. and enjoy!
