Perfect for you who want to get away from crowded and many activities you always do. Brown Bamboo guesthouse is peaceful and the view from your room is the river. You will not hear any noisy sound but flowing water. The guesthouse has its own restaurant if you want to try Indonesian food and a tourist information center. The owner is also the leader of the Indonesian Guide Association.

Detailed Reviews
The room is spacious with its own equipped bathroom. There is A/C and fan plus a great wifi connection. The bed is comfortable and you get a proper blanket (something that I haven’t experienced while staying in low budget accommodations in Sumatra).
The restaurant has a wide range of options for food, all of them come in great proportions for very good price. The owner (Gia) is a very friendly guy who is usually hanging around in the restaurant. He has personnel for jungle tracking at regular market price.
The hotel is at a perfect location if you want some peace. It is away from the hotspot for the families who are touring around and people staying here are usually locals or solo travellers. The river flows by the front side and you can easily walk next to it, either to the center of Bukit Lawang (where all hotels and restaurants are) or to the village where the locals live.
I think the price is great. You get everything you need from an accomodation you’re probably taking just for a day or two and then go to the jungle.

Nice place with kind and helpful staff. Rooms are okay (ask for the ones facing the river, much better than the ones in the back). We had an amazing jungle trip with our guide Jasu, saw lots of cool animals and he acted respectfully towards the orangutans and the jungle (other guides didn’t) and made sure we did the same.

My partner and I had such a great time at this place! Our stay was especially made better by Jasu Pinem, one of the trek guides. He was extremely helpful, knowledgeable and an incredibly nice person. We became friends during our stay and still keep in contact.
Couldn't rate this place and the people high enough. Everyone there was awesome! Eddie as well. The food was great.
We actually stayed in 2019

Very clean and comfy room! The owners are extremely friendly and helpful! We played monopoly with the adorable children one evening! The food at the guesthouse restaurant is also reasonably priced! Highly recommend, would've liked to stay longer!!

On the river in Bukit Lawang run by a lovely family. It's very quiet and peaceful. Rooms are very clean with own verandah and lovely bathroom filled with plants and open sky. Good food at their restaurant. Very welcoming place to stay and not so touristic as most of the guest houses in BL.

Well, I don't know what to begin with. The quality of the service is very very good, clean, big and cooled rooms for a very nice price. The employees are always wearing a smile on them and willing to help. The locations is the best and there are no mosquitoes at night. The food they offer is just delicious. And well, the trekking is the best and most authentic thing Ive done in Asia, make sure you book it directly to them, they are very responsible and know the jungle by heart.
Just want to finish saying thank you to you guys, its been an amazing journey.
Ahora en Español, lo dicho poco mas que añadir, si de verdad queréis tener una experiencia inolvidable id a este guesthouse y haced un trekking con sus guías!

Very nice place, run by a very helpful and happy family! The owner is also the President of Bukit Lawang guides association (a very nice and trustful guy). We did the jungle trekking through the association and was great! An to Cebol, his guide...was also really nice, he was very relaxed and taught us a lot about the jungle! Also very respectful with the animals.
We also did the Tangkahan excursion with brown bamboo, once again...everything great! The owner and one of his relatives came with us and we spent a very nice day with the elephants! Getting to wash them and feed them was amazing!

Superb hospitality! Great food. I love the curry although im not a big fan of curry. Very near to the main entrance of 'tourist village' but peaceful enough for good night sleep. Easy access, but still have good privacy, especially for room at furthest end. Beautiful half open air bathroom. However the shower head could be better serviced. No water heater? Not a problem for me. Comfy bed with mosquito net, clean sizable room for the price i paid. The owner is the head of trekking guides in BL, thus very trustable and knowledgable, and helped arranged my trek with great guide from other guesthouse (as i travel solo), with no mark up price at all! In fact i got slightly better deal with abang Gia! Free use of bicycle. And many more... just dont expect a hilton, then you'll be happy.

We arrived late and were greeted by friendly staff the dining area is nice.
The room was clean and pretty spacious. Very comfy bed with good mosquito net.
The rooms do have a fan attached to the wall that does help with the humidity a bit but it is a hot place so doesn’t do a whole lot.
The bathroom has a half open ceiling with plant hanging down into it. With a cold
Shower and a proper western toilet that needs filling up from the little tap next to the toilet. (Simple but takes a while). Does make you feel like you are in the jungle. We quite liked it’s quirkiness. But bugs etc do get in there. It doesn’t have a sink.
Friendly people. Very jolly.
Food was mixed- but Ok. Nice milkshake, really good pancakes. Good portion sizes.
It was only £5 a night. For that it’s fabulous!
Thank you Brown Bamboo lovely staff and Umbrella!
Just look around for transport if you are using it. Pick up from the airport was great and cost 500,000. Lovely driver all good.
Arranged through brown bamboo.
Our return trip was organised through an agency and was actually terrifying. The driver was completely mad! Drove like a lunatic (takes a lot to phase us) this did. He could barely keep his eyes open. Kept nearly falling asleep. Overtaking with fast oncoming traffic had to chain smoke or talk on the phone to keep himself awake.
Very scary!
Saturday night is party night in Bukit Lawang perhaps avoid getting a car the next day!!
Or there is a minibus that leaves at 8:30am each morning for 120,000 per person to Medan!
We miss you Bukit Lawang!
