- dancing-freakTel Aviv, Israel1,243 contributionsA Restful Boat RideA boat ride on the Saint Martin canal is a nice thing to do in case you have some extra free hours. The trip runs either way from the Vuilettes to Arsenal or v.v., passes through neighborhoods that definitely are a part of Paris, but are much less crowded. The boat goes through 8 locks that take care of the difference in height at both ends of the canal. The boat also passes through two tunnels underneath streets. At its southern end the tunnel has wide holes in the ceiling through which light and fresh air enter. This is where the canal passes underneath the Place de la Bastille.Visited May 2023Written June 24, 2023
- unclelouieNew Ulm, Minnesota1,350 contributionsWe finally got to the Canal Saint-MartinWe've been lucky to have been in Paris a few times but for no particular reason we never made it to this canal. On a recent trip we decided to find a place to stay that was close to the canal. We spent one day just walking along side the canal and enjoyed it so much. We were in that part of Paris for a week and walked next to the canal four times in all. Once was in the Parc de la Villette and on one other occasion we walked along the canal from the Opera Bastille to the Seine. We loved each of these walks.Visited June 2023Written August 5, 2023
- NeilpsnPerth, Australia16 contributionsCanal Saint Martin boat tripTook a boat from the jetty opposite Musee d'Orsay along the Seine and into the Canal Saint Martin and the first of its multiple lock gates. Views along the river are always great, but I'd never been along the canal. Great commentary added to this wonderfully interesting trip. The covered sections of the canal and the history behind this were fascinating. The later sections of the boat ride (I took the 1 way trip) were through parts of Paris I hadn't visited before, so a few hours after getting off of the boat led to more happy wandering and exploring. I would recommend this trip.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 18, 2023
- Carolyn SGreenfield, Indiana65 contributionsBoat Ride on the CanalI took a boat ride down the canal with my aunt and uncle. We went through several locks which lowered us enough to go underground through the covered part of the canal. We eventually made it to the Seine. I highly recommend taking a boat ride on the canal. There also were several interesting bridges that moved out of the way of the boats. Even if you can't take a boat ride, it would be worth coming to see the moving bridges and watch a boat go through the locks.Visited July 2023Traveled with familyWritten September 25, 2023
- John KPerth, Australia329 contributionsFascinating work of engineering and construction. We really enjoyed this experience. We chose a morning booking and on reflection think this is the best time of day to make this trip. Fascinating engineering and construction for its time. Very enjoyable and relaxing break from the hustle and bustle of Paris. We started this trip from Paris and finished at the Palais Des Glaces which is a very interesting community hub and worth taking some time to stroll around. All things considered, a very stimulating and relaxing half day experience.Visited June 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 13, 2023

- Opéra / Bourse HotelsThe neighborhood around Opéra and Bourse is a belle époque paradise of grand boulevards, refined arcades, and mass-market art-nouveau entertainment. Here, modern day workers continue to take advantage of the legacy that nobility and finance left in the 19th century. Brightly-lit brasseries, theaters, and cinemas sit side by side with French bistros predominating in one area and Japanese restaurants in another.
