THE 5 BEST Hotels in Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria (Lisbon) 2024
Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria Hotels
Explore narrow streets and alleyways, small cafes and, of course, the internationally acclaimed Fado music. The earth-shattering Great Earthquake of 1755 destroyed most of the city but the contiguous neighborhoods of Mouraria, Castelo and Alfama remained standing to this day. These neighborhoods represent Lisbon at its historical best. The cool breeze of the Tagus river will take you up the hills to the sound of Fado, where you'll discover the best "tascas," eat delicious fresh fish and drink great wines. Discover hidden viewpoints and ancient traces of other civilizational ruins in the heart of the Portuguese capital. These are centuries-old neighborhoods that will welcome you to the very best of old Lisbon culture.

- Paul H4 contributionsNot for those with mobility issuesAnyone who knows the area will know that it is hilly and this hotel is perched a good way up the slope. So it is not for people with mobility issues or those who struggle with a bit of a climb. The staff were outstanding and could not be more helpful. Anyone familiar with my previous reviews will know that I have a quirky thing about soft poached eggs and this place excels at them. Great breakfast, excellent dinner and great location.Visited February 2023Written March 20, 2023
- Gerard CDerrygonnelly, United Kingdom96 contributionsA walk through the pastAlfama is one of the oldest districts of Lisbon and it is a must in anyone's itinerary. The streets are steep and not for the fainthearted but a visit is well worth the effort. There is a plentiful choice of cafes and souvenir shops along the route to the Sao Jorge Castle. This particular castle dates back to the eleventh century and there are spectacular views of the city from its walls. There are peacocks in the grounds of the castle and they certainly make it a colourful occasion. In many senses this is the real Lisbon. Lisbon Cathedral is also en route.Visited March 2023Written April 4, 2023
- 16jamesdocLondon, United Kingdom676 contributionsThe Moreish quarterFor such an atmospheric city, Alfama is perhaps the most atmospheric quarter of all. Set on steep hills, it offers endless perspectives of steps, alleys and byways. It's mostly pedestrian but at times an ancient tram rumbles by. Every so often a narrow street breaks out into lovely views (miradouras) of the city. Best tackled in dry weather however because the cobbled lanes could be slippery.Visited April 2023Traveled with friendsWritten April 10, 2023
- Nazeem M3 contributionsCharming neighbouhood, steeped in historyWalked through this charming neighbourhood on a guided tour. Later, stopped at a restaurant for lunch. Also had a sip of homemade sour cherry liquor (liquor de Ginga) from a stall set up in front of a home. There are many things to see (e.g. the photo exhibit mounted on walls of people in the neighbourhood community); had a unique experience walking through this historic neighbourhood.Visited April 2023Written April 10, 2023
- Ali KAberdeen, United Kingdom22 contributionsNot impressedGot the yellow hop on hop off bus and was not impressed. Felt they missed out on the areas we wanted to visit - fenicular, castle, palace, viewing points. Also booked just for the Saturday trip which showed up on the app, however when got to bus found I'd paid for three days. Will try to get a refund but unsuccessfgul so far in finding where to do this. The inforamtion given was that you could use your ticket to go on a river cruise and use the fenicular but did not advance any on this inforamtion.Visited April 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten April 30, 2023
- ELIZABETH NYAERALondon, United Kingdom4 contributionsA charming stroll through the historic neighborhoodI absolutely loved exploring Alfama! This charming neighborhood is full of history and character, and I felt like I stepped back in time as I wandered through the narrow streets and alleyways. There are plenty of traditional shops, cafes, and restaurants to discover, and the views of the city from the hilltops are breathtaking.Visited April 2023Written May 4, 2023
- DanTrav9Colorado Springs, Colorado29 contributionsA gorgeous, old part of Lisbon that's ALIVENarrow, twisting streets (Paths? Alleys?? Walkways??? - not sure what to call them when their only 8 feet wide but travelled by vehicles and pedestrians alike! This area is so interesting and vibrant and OLD! We have no idea in the U.S. what old really means. Delicious food, beautiful old buildings, scenic views. This area is VIBRANT! Don't miss when you visit Lisbon!Visited April 2023Written May 21, 2023
- SassyLass7Toronto, Canada229 contributionsSo much to see!We spent a day here and I would have come back if time permitted. A must see in Lisbon. Many sights and shops to take in. If you don't enjoy walking and steep sidewalks then perhaps this isn't for you.Visited April 2023Written May 25, 2023
- Filip H25 contributionsHistoric soul of LisbonAlfama stole my heart! This historic district in Lisbon is just beautiful. Strolling through narrow streets, listening to music, floating from local bar to local bar. Great vibe - must-visitVisited April 2023Written May 29, 2023
- Michael K995 contributionsInteresting and scenic place with lots of hiking up and down hillsThis hilly district is the location of Castelo de Sao Jorge, a must-see attraction in Lisbon. Besides the view at the castle, there are many other viewpoints in this area, with the best view at Miradouro da Senhora do Monte. Unfortunately this area is not served by the Metro. For public transportation, take tram 28 or 12 and prepare to do a lot of hiking up and down hills.Visited May 2023Written June 14, 2023

- Baixa, Rossio & Restauradores HotelsA pending candidate to become a World Heritage Site, Lisbon's downtown (the "Baixa Pombalina", or simply "Baixa") is a perfect example of anti-earthquake construction, having been rebuilt following the 1755 earthquake by the famous Marquês de Pombal (hence its name). Its offer is vast: restaurants and cafes in Rossio and Restauradores, outlets and shops in the Áurea, Augusta, Prata and other famous streets, the imponent Praça do Comércio and its Arch, the luxury shops along the Avenida da Liberdade, this is the beating heart of the city center. The Baixa also grants easy access to trains leading to Sintra, the trams that go around the Castle hill, old neighborhoods or even take you to Belém, and Lisbon's traditional restaurants and cafes. Considering a visit to the Fashion and Design Museum (free entrance) and don't forget to try the famous liquor, "ginjinha"!Read more
- Bairro Alto, Bica & Cais do Sodré HotelsEnjoy a cocktail, discover a jazz club, hit the dance floor or simply grab a beer and catch up with your friends in the street: Bairro Alto, Bica and Cais do Sodré are the core of it all. Amazing rooftops, restaurants, cafes, bars, art galleries, museums and theaters abound. Start off by admiring the river from the Santa Catarina belvedere, have a cocktail at PARK's rooftop bar, try a typical Portuguese steak, or the fresh grilled fish, at Príncipe do Calhariz, and later explore the dozens of streets full of bars and clubs! Whether you're visiting for a day or a whole week, make sure you visit Bairro Alto and its surroundings.Read more
- Chiado & Carmo HotelsThe traditionally trendy "Chiado" (literally, "squeak", the nickname of a 16th century poet) offers plenty of cafes, restaurants and bars where you can stop for a cafe or cocktail, after exploring its streets, shops, art galleries, theaters, museums and viewpoints. It's also the home to the statue of the famous statue of portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa, having is usual espresso at "A Brasileira" as he used to. You can also enjoy breathtaking views of Lisbon from the Elevador de Santa Justa or the Carmo Convent, for example. A commercial neighborhood at its core, especially for its Garrett and Carmo streets, Chiado is to this day a mandatory visit in Lisbon.Read more
- Parque das Nações HotelsThis neighborhood was built up at the end of the 1990s mostly because of the Expo '98. The pavilions and structures that once were the home of all the Expo's attractions and exhibits are still culturally and artistically significant. In Parque das Nações you'll explore conference and concert pavilions, a shopping center, trendy restaurants and an enjoyable cable car ride you can't miss out on. On top of this, the amazing Lisbon Oceanarium (one of the most spectacular things you'll ever see in the city) will take your breath away: its respect and will to preserve natural wildlife is uncanny. Easily accessible by metro, bus or taxi from the city center, Parque das Nações is highly recommended for anyone who'll spend more than 3 days in the Portuguese capital.Read more

- Belém HotelsBelém is the "capital of the Portuguese Discoveries" and a photographer's paradise. You can spend an entire day exploring this neighborhood: monuments (Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower, Monument to the Discoveries), museums (Coach Museum, Centro Cultural de Belém) and breathtaking views of the Tagus river will make your visit worth your time. Belém also offers a variety of restaurants and cafes, namely the famous - and delicious - "Pastéis de Belém" (typical Portuguese custard tarts; make sure you buy an extra box of those!). Easily accessible from Lisbon's historic center, Belém is a must-do, especially if you're spending more than one day visiting the Portuguese capital.Read more
- Graça & São Vicente HotelsYou can be thankful that most common travel guides don't mention Graça and São Vicente that often. Part of Lisbon's historic center and "Old Town", they feel like independent villages in the capital's center, and more untouched than Alfama. Amazing views, restaurants and parks, as well as important monuments like the S. Vicente Church and the National Pantheon, make this a spectacular option for those looking for a more tranquil walk-around in the center of Lisbon. Graça has been the choice of many younger people over the past years, both nationals and expats, given the cozy feeling of the neighborhood and its hidden secrets.Read more
