Definitely a local place but you can easily watch and follow. Great tempura and delicious udon along with tofu. Pick up a tray and dish for the tempura, select your noodles and size, and pay. Cheap! Self-help for heating the noodles and adding broth and...toppings. Just a bit of English here. Group seating. Be flexible and observe and you will be happy you came.More
The restaurant is in the walking distance of Ritsurin Garden. We have delicious Udon lunch here. You can choose whatever you want to eat in the self-service table, everything are delicious. It will be great if there is any English even Japanese guide - to tell...people how to heating the Udon.More
Having Sanuki udon at where it has originated from was the highlight of our family trip in Takamatsu. And boy, Ueharayahonten has proven to be more than just udon, but the whole local experience of it! We came after visiting Ritsurin Koen, and it was...easy to park our MPV at its parking area as customer turnover at the udon shop was fairly quick during lunch hour on a working Monday. 6 of us (from 7 to 78 years old) queued for just a short while outside the shop, then moved inside, passed a wash basin sink where customers can clean their hands. When it's our turn at the counter, we chose our udon portion size and picked up out tempura side dishes. We paid, and went ahead to dip the udon in hot soup, and sprinkled chopped spring onions and tempura flakes on the udon before moving to the dining area. Note that the portion of the udon was pretty big. A small sized udon should be big enough for most female diners. It was such a fun experience for my 7 year old as he was able to get involved in making his own udon lunch. Food was delicious, though the tempura, as expected, was on the more oily side. The dining area was canteen setting, but no problem with getting seats as customers tend to finish quickly. Make sure you come early as the shop closes early at I think 6-7pm. Will visit again if we go back to Takamatsu one day.More
We found this restaurant after visiting the near-by Ritsurin Garden. We just search for "cheap eats near us" and this came up with good reviews. It was a great choice for lunch (we don't think they are open for dinner). Takamatsu is known for its...Udon noodles and although I really can't say whether these noodles were the best ever they were very good. As is the Tempura. The meal is made better by the experience itself. It was very busy, we had to wait outside for a short time and when we were there it was all local folk - office workers, blue-collar workers, older folk. First, as you are in line inside waiting, look up - yes, for those who do not speak or read Japanese (like us) the photos will help you choose. As you proceed along take a plate and put your Tempura on it - we wanted to take our time but the impatient queue behind us did not allow that - choose quickly - we are sure it will all be delicious. At the noodle stop point to the photo above you and choose your size (small or large). Now you pay. The cashier on the day made sure we knew what to do. Turn around to the boiling water bath, put your noodles in a basket and shake them up and down as you count to ten. Right beside you is the soup. Handle down for a good stock. Don't worry just watch the locals. Now the toppings - we took some of everything on top of the soup and the mild ginger topping for the Tempura. Slurp, slurp, slurp - there is nothing impolite about sucking the Udon noodles up with gusto. There is a water dispenser and also hot green tea. Don't linger after you have finished there are others queued and waiting outside. Return your tray to the counter - "Arigato gozaimasu" The meal was more than food, it was an experience. Thoroughly enjoyable. Recommended.More
When you first stepped into the shop, the first things that you could see are a large car park full with cars, and a long queue waiting to enter the restaurant. Since the restaurant bases on "first come first get seat", that means you might...need to take some time to wait the people inside to finish their meals first. After you have entered the shop, you will follow the queue to pick the food you like. Of course you will go to cook the noodles, and suppose you should do it by your own, but if you have problems, kindly find a staff to ask and even they might not be able to speak good English, still they are willing to offer assistance with a pleasant smile. And finally, remember to enjoy your food by eating with sound, as well as finish them all in a reasonable time since the queue is always there and watching you when you will finish the food.More
A cheap place, sort of self service, where udon are cooked for you and you add on what you want. The incredibly friendly atmosphere of the Japanese working ladies.
Fantastic place for lunch before visiting Ritsurin Koen. You choose small or large size udon, the cook for five seconds in the hot water bath then add chopped spring onions, pepper and tempura flakes. As you choose your size of udon you choose your topping,...everything looks really good but I had gobo and sweet potato tempura which were both delicious. The place is full of local workers so you just sit a long bench tables. Make sure you return your tray when you finish. They make their own udon each day and when it is sold out the restaurant is closed. Unfortunately they are not open at night. Takamatsu is a centre for udon and this place is one of the best.More
This our 2nd visit to Ueharaya for Sanuki Udon, and even though they have moved to a bigger fancier spot, the experience was still fantastic. We travelled an hour just for udon, and combined it with a walk in the beautiful park across the street....At the restaurant, you stand in line, choose your various tempura side dishes, seafood or vegetables. Then medium or large bowl for the noodles, wait for your noodles, immerse them in hot water and return them to the server for the bukkake stronger broth, or continue for the regular broth. Add condiments such as fish flakes, ginger, chili powder or green onions (or all as I did), find a seat and eat. Delicious chewy tasty noodles, and broth. 7 of us ate for 4100 yen about $6.50 each. Stay only until you finish your meal, as other are waiting for your seat. In Japan getting up is polite practise. The best noodles I have had anywhere.More
